Chapter 147 How Could Someone Insane Care About Anyone Else?

"Give the Soto family a heads-up. If they're planning to kill any women soon, they need to check with me first."

"Got it."

Emilio hung up and slipped his phone into his pocket.

A man's voice came from behind him, "Emilio."

Emilio squinted. When did this idiot show up?

Mario stood in the doorway, completely oblivious to the murderous aura Emilio was emitting, and innocently asked, "Where's Selena? I want to see her."

Emilio waved impatiently. "She went out to buy something. She'll be back soon."

Mario was still feverish and his mind was foggy. "Really? I don't believe you. I want some yogurt, the kind with nuts."

Emilio gave him a once-over, then walked inside and shut the door. "If you want it, you'll have to wait. All the stores are closed, and there's a blackout. You can't buy anything right now."

"I don't believe you."

Mario plopped down on the floor. "I don't believe you. Go out and get it for me."

Emilio took a few steps forward and saw Mario rolling on the ground. "I'm really hungry. If I don't eat something, I'll die. I want yogurt..."

He rattled off a list of foods, none of which Emilio remembered.

It had rained that afternoon, and the ground was still wet. Mario rolled around, getting soaked, but he seemed oblivious.

Emilio grabbed a stool and sat under the eaves. Candles were lit around him, casting a dim light. He had no idea when the power would come back on. He watched with interest as a grown man rolled around in the mud like a child.

After ten minutes, Mario seemed to realize he wasn't getting any food tonight and fainted in frustration.

Emilio got up, walked over, and kicked him lightly, realizing Mario had really passed out. He dragged him inside, turned on the floor heating to warm the place up, and left him on the floor.

Mario, already feverish, got worse from the ordeal but eventually woke up. His face was flushed.

Emilio glanced outside and noticed the lights were on. The villa just hadn't turned them on yet. The power must have come back about ten minutes ago.

He turned on the lights, and the room warmed up.

"Emilio, do you think Selena might be dead?" Mario asked, still delirious from the fever.

Emilio was already annoyed with him. How could someone Insane care about anyone else? He was about to brush him off when he heard soft footsteps in the yard. Very soft, as if the person was deliberately being quiet.

It wasn't Selena. But who else would come to this small villa at this hour?

"Hide!"

As soon as he spoke, gunshots rang out.

His expression turned fierce. He grabbed the gun hidden under the sofa and took cover behind the door.

It seemed tonight wasn't just about the Soto family. Other families were involved too.

He saw Mario lying in the most conspicuous spot and had a malicious thought: to leave him to his fate. After all, Selena had only asked him to look after Mario, not protect his life in such a situation. Besides, in Selena's eyes, he was just a helpless student with a bleak future, unable to protect himself.

So Emilio didn't bother with Mario. If he died, he died.

But Mario crawled over to him, hiding at his feet.

'Fuck, this idiot is surprisingly smart in a crisis.'

He cursed internally and heard footsteps inside the house. He quickly turned off the lights and fired towards the sound.

Something heavy hit the ground, but the gunfire intensified. There were more people outside.

What was going on? Had his cover been blown?

Outnumbered, he instinctively grabbed Mario to use as a shield.

Bullets flew around him, and he felt a sharp pain in his knee, breaking out in a cold sweat.

There was another heavy thud outside, indicating someone else had arrived.

The door was pushed open, and the lights came back on.

Emilio forced himself to look and saw Selena.

She held a gun, her fingers trembling slightly.

"Selena, why are you back?"

Selena quickly grabbed a tent, blankets, and some dry food from inside. "I was following those cars, but I saw more heading this way. I was worried something might happen to you guys, so I came back."

Emilio felt a pang of guilt, having used Mario as a shield. He glanced down and saw Mario was okay, just a graze on his cheek from a bullet.

He thought, ' Damn it! This idiot has incredible luck.'

He, hiding behind, had still been shot in the knee.
