Chapter 176 Couldn't Find Peace
Carter was a bit thrown off, but when he heard Grace had been in a car accident, he jumped out of bed and started getting dressed.
His phone was on speaker, and the driver's voice kept coming through, "Mr. Ashford, Mrs. Ashford wants you to check on your girlfriend. She's hurt too and should be at the police station now. Mrs. Ashford said you don't need to come see her."
Lillian, who had been trying to get cozy with Carter, froze when she heard "girlfriend."
Lillian had never been introduced to Grace, so the girlfriend Grace mentioned definitely wasn't her.
Lillian shot Carter a suspicious look, but all he wanted was to get to the hospital.
Carter had once asked Selena to pretend to be his girlfriend.
But he didn't have time to explain. He threw on his coat and leaned down to kiss Lillian on the lips. "Baby, be good and wait here. I need to go out for a bit."
Lillian was a bit reluctant and super sensitive. She knew Grace didn't like the women around Carter and was always scared of being separated from him.
Lillian asked, "Carter, can I go with you?"
Carter immediately said no, "I'll take you to meet my mom next time. I gotta go now."
Lillian opened her mouth but couldn't say anything more.
The room suddenly felt empty. Lillian was just a receptionist at the Montague Group. Being with Carter was unexpected, but she genuinely liked him.
Lillian was eager to make an impression in front of Grace. She remembered that Selena had comforted her before and that Selena and Carter were good friends.
So Lillian put on her clothes and went to Selena's door, ringing the doorbell, but no one answered.
Lillian refused to leave and waited there.
After two hours, Selena finally showed up.
Having dealt with the police, she came back intending to freshen up before heading to see Grace.
But as soon as she stepped out of the elevator, Selena saw Lillian standing at her door and immediately felt a headache coming on.
Lillian's eyes lit up when she saw her. "Penny!"
She walked up quickly and asked, "I heard Carter's mom was in a car accident. He's already at the hospital. Can you help me get the exact room number? I want to visit her."
Selena had planned to freshen up at home before going to the hospital, but with Lillian clinging to her, if Grace said anything, Lillian would probably hold a grudge against her.
Now that Lillian was her neighbor, things could get messy if they escalated.
Selena suddenly felt her life was quite troublesome. Even after moving from the Ashbourne Manor, she still couldn't find peace.
If she refused Lillian too bluntly, it would be awkward to interact with Carter in the future, as Lillian was Carter's girlfriend.
Selena raised her hand to rub her temples. "I'll get the room number and let you know. Give me your phone number."
With that, they exchanged contact info at the door.
Selena returned to her room, feeling exhausted and dizzy.
She filled the bathtub with water, thinking of taking a bath before going to apologize to Grace, but she ended up falling asleep in the tub.
She only woke up when she heard knocking on the door. Groggily, she put on the clothes beside her and, holding her dizzy head, went to the living room.
The knocking continued. She tightened the belt of her robe and saw Lillian standing outside. "Penny, it's already this late. Do you have the room number?"
Selena could barely see Lillian's face clearly. She managed to call Carter and got the room number, which she then gave to Lillian.
Lillian thanked her a bunch and immediately went downstairs, seemingly heading to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Carter got Selena's call and noticed something was off in her voice, saying, "Grace said you were also hurt. Get some rest. She's fine, just a mild concussion, and she's about to be discharged."
Selena couldn't just not go see Grace, as she felt responsible. "Mr. Ashford, I'll be there soon."
Carter tried to stop her. "Penny, are you feeling unwell? Don't push yourself. I'm worried you'll faint halfway there."
"I'm fine."
Carter couldn't persuade Selena, so he said, "Raymond is also coming over. You're right between the Montague Group and the hospital. I'll have him pick you up on the way. Don't drive yourself."
Selena quickly wanted to refuse, but she started coughing, and Carter had already hung up.
Selena anxiously called Carter back, but a mechanical female voice informed her that he was on another call. It seemed Carter was already calling Raymond.
