Chapter 51 James's Heart had Clearly Tilted Towards Beatrice
"No matter what, apologize to Beatrice first. She's been looking for Alice all night," James said.
Those words cut through Selena like a knife.
James was trying to comfort Beatrice while reaching out to pat Selena on the shoulder. "Selena, it's not that I don't want to help you. You know Alice's condition. The doctor said if she doesn't take care of herself, she might only have ten years left."
Selena dodged his hand.
It was a small move, but it felt like a wall had gone up between them.
James looked stunned, a flicker of disappointment crossing his face. "Beatrice was impulsive this time. Your face is swollen. I'll get you some medicine."
First the criticism, then a bit of comfort; Selena was tired of this routine.
"Dad, it's not necessary," Selena said coolly, dropping her hand from her cheek. "I'm leaving. If Alice wakes up, just take care of her."
As Selena turned to leave, she heard Beatrice's cold laugh. "Finally showing your true colors, huh? Alice isn't even out of the emergency room, and you're already leaving. I bet you're hoping she doesn't make it, so you'll be the only daughter in the Fair family, right?"
"Beatrice!" James finally scolded, thinking she'd gone too far.
"Beatrice is just angry. Don't take her words to heart..." James apologized to Selena.
Selena's lips curled into a sarcastic smile. "Even if I said I hope Alice is safe, no one in the Fair family would believe me. I'll take this slap from Beatrice, but this is the last time."
With that, Selena stepped into the elevator without looking back.
As soon as the elevator doors closed, Beatrice pointed a trembling finger at where Selena had just stood. "Look at her attitude. She doesn't respect you as a father at all!"
James sighed, "News just came in from the Montague family; they're willing to help us secure the second round of funding. This is all thanks to Selena's efforts. She can be headstrong, but there's no need to hit her every time she provokes you."
Beatrice pouted, thinking she hadn't slapped hard enough.
Selena walked out of the elevator in a daze, the pain not on her face but in her heart.
She never cared about Beatrice's opinion of her, but now James's heart had clearly tilted towards Beatrice.
Selena was in a hurry as she exited the elevator, walking straight ahead and bumping into someone at the corner, causing her to step back a few paces.
She didn't look up to see who it was. "Sorry," she mumbled, about to leave with her head down.
But a hesitant voice came from behind, "Penny?"
Selena froze and turned around to see Carter's mother, Grace.
Grace was dressed in a well-fitted suit, carrying an expensive handbag. Seeing the redness and swelling on Selena's face, she was both surprised and angry. "Who hit you? Did you have a fight with Carter?"
Selena had been feeling frustrated, and now encountering Grace, she felt only nervousness.
With Carter not around, should she come clean to Grace?
Otherwise, as things became harder to explain, she would be truly stuck.
"Ms. Montague, actually I..." Selena stammered with sobs.
Before she could finish, Grace grabbed Selena's hand and took her to one of the hospital rooms, calling a doctor to treat her swollen face.
With the doctor there, Selena couldn't say anything more, feeling even more burdened.
Seeing Selena's obedient demeanor, Grace was furious.
Grace's personal doctor was unavailable today to deliver her usual medication. She had intended to have someone else bring it to her, but since she was passing by this hospital, she decided to pick it up herself. She hadn't expected to run into Selena in such a sorry state.
Grace took out her phone to call Carter, but couldn't get through.
Grace thought Carter was probably out partying with friends again.
She then called Raymond. "Raymond, find out where Carter is. He's getting out of hand."
Raymond glanced at the night outside, puzzled. "Aunt Grace, what's the matter?"
"He hit Penny. I never thought he would hit a girl!" Grace responded with rage.
