Chapter 121 How Could Work be More Important Than His Wife?
Raymond's lips were pressed tight. With his good hand, he hit the answer button. Just as he was figuring out how to start the chat, William's soothing voice came through.
"Raymond, you did great this time. You've finally grown up. It's cool if you don't come tonight; I won't hold it against you."
Raymond squinted, a bit puzzled by William's words.
Usually, whenever William called, he'd mention Selena within three sentences.
But tonight, William didn't seem to be going there.
Maybe it was because of the big acquisition that just went down?
William rarely cared about business stuff. After handing over the Montague Group to Raymond, he'd been chilling, focusing on his treatment and enjoying retirement.
If it wasn't for the recent successful acquisition, Raymond couldn't think of anything else that would make William this happy.
So he naturally said, "Grandpa, it's what I should do. I'll keep working hard."
But to William, those words meant something else.
William had been pretty ticked off tonight. He'd asked Raymond to pick up Selena, but Raymond seemed reluctant, saying he had to work late. How could work be more important than his wife?
William had been waiting for Raymond and Selena to show up so he could formally introduce Selena to everyone.
Selena had been through a lot, and even now, many people in Silver Bay City didn't know her status.
Since she married into the Montague Family, no one should mess with her anymore.
So, when Raymond was late, William was just mad. But now, hearing this good news, he felt relieved, thinking Raymond had finally grown up.
"Raymond, I thought you were just making excuses about working hard. I was wrong to blame you. Keep it up."
Raymond sighed in relief, thinking it was rare for William to care about the company and not mention Selena. His anxiety eased up a lot. "I got it."
After hanging up, William's face lit up with a hint of joy. This was better than any medicine. Maybe he'd have a great-grandchild by the end of the year.
William had no idea he and Raymond were talking about totally different things.
Raymond, glad William hadn't brought up Selena again, relaxed a bit and watched the doctor continue stitching his wound.
Outside, Selena looked at Jacob, who was sitting nearby. Her face darkened as she demanded, "What were you thinking? Disappearing for so many years and showing up in Silver Bay City as a beggar?"
Jacob, knowing he was in the wrong, scratched his head irritably. "Did you see my parents?"
"Your parents have been waiting for you to come back. With you gone, Megan's been acting all high and mighty at home. You insisted on marrying her, and now you've left your parents and wife behind and ran off? Do you have any sense of responsibility, Jacob?"
Jacob's clothes were shabby but clean. Hearing Selena's words, he got a bit angry. "Can't you just pretend you never saw me? I really have no sense of responsibility. My parents shouldn't have had me in the first place!"
Seeing Jacob's resistance, Selena frowned. "You have to go back and see them. They wait for your call every day. Megan, she..."
"Don't mention that woman to me!" Jacob continued to scratch his head irritably and glanced at the ward. "Anyway, I can't afford that guy's medical bills. You said it yourself, I'm a beggar. Now that you're okay, I'm leaving."
He stood up and was about to leave.
"Jacob!" Selena grabbed his arm, her brows furrowed. "What happened to you?"
When Selena used to live at Brian's house, Jacob was a pretty filial son, shy and introverted. How could he have changed so much in just a few years?
"Brian and Erin are worried you might never find someone willing to marry you in the future, so they're really good to Megan. Last time, Megan took Brian's car and made him walk. Brian got heatstroke and fainted by the roadside, but he told me not to blame her, saying she was the only one willing to marry you. The news about you embezzling client money and borrowing from loan sharks has spread. To Brian and Erin, Megan is the only one who hasn't abandoned you."
Hearing this, Jacob choked up and gritted his teeth. "That witch."
Selena took a deep breath, feeling stifled by Jacob's attitude.
Just as she was about to speak, Brian called.
Seeing the caller ID, Jacob instinctively wanted to run, but Selena held him back. "At least say something to Brian!"
"Get lost! Selena, who do you think you are? Your family's issues are way more complicated than ours. Mind your own business!"
