Chapter 1606 That Kind of Resistance Comes from the Deepest Part of the Heart
But they couldn't rescue Lawrence just yet. If the person inside the glass box disappeared, the entire base would quickly realize there was movement and conduct a thorough investigation.
Raymond and the others who hadn't escaped would be completely exposed, and no one would be able to get out.
Raymond needed to return to the ventilation shaft and retrieve the dozen or so bottles filled with compressed gas that he had thrown out. Only then could he clear himself of suspicion.
"Clifton, you should head back to your place."
Clifton's mouth twitched. "What about him?"
He pointed at Lawrence.
Raymond rubbed his forehead. "His chest is still moving, so he should be alive. If we rescue him now, both he and we will be dead."
Everyone was smart enough to understand this.
Clifton quickly left, and Raymond returned to the core research lab.
The lab hadn't been affected, but Calla, who should have been conducting experiments there, was nowhere to be seen.
Raymond didn't think much of it and immediately went back to his room. He crawled into the ventilation duct, retrieved all the bottles, and discreetly mixed them into the core lab.
Meanwhile, Calla had already come out when the chaos erupted outside. She stood amidst the confusion.
She saw Zaid appear and suddenly rush into the chaos.
He grabbed a woman.
Calla's pupils contracted sharply when she saw the woman's face.
She pushed aside the frenzied researchers blocking her way and strode towards Zaid.
She and Zaid had never formally met a few times, and they weren't familiar with each other.
But she just didn't like Zaid, ever since she first saw his face.
That aversion came from the deepest part of her heart.
Zaid was holding 00.
Raymond had previously let 00 in, and she had entered first. Now, her wrist was being held.
Her protective suit had been torn apart by the crazed researchers, and there were scratches on her face.
Zaid's expression darkened instantly, followed by a light laugh. "Selena?"
He quickly denied it. "No, not Selena. Very similar, too similar."
He pulled her into his arms.
"Not only does she look like her, but her actions and demeanor are also very similar. I'm surprised. Could Raymond be here too?" Zaid was always a smart person. He didn't believe there could be such similar people in the world. This was clearly a deliberate cultivation.
But who would cultivate a Selena look-alike?
00 tried to break free, her face cold. "Who are you?"
She knew Zaid's information but had never seen him in person.
Zaid raised an eyebrow, finding it even more interesting.
He was about to speak when a bullet whizzed past his ear, heading towards 00.
00's shoulder was hit. She looked in the direction the bullet came from and saw Atlas holding the gun.
Atlas's clothes were disheveled, indicating he had arrived in a hurry.
He was about to pull the trigger again when Zaid blocked 00. "What are you doing? Who told you to shoot?"
"Zaid, I saw her..."
Her hand moved in her pocket, clearly hiding something.
It could be a knife or a vial.
Dangerous vials were everywhere in the central hall. If this woman had one, she definitely intended to kill Zaid.
Atlas prioritized Zaid above all else. If this woman wanted to kill Zaid, he would kill her.
00 indeed held a small knife, ready to slash Zaid's throat at any moment.
Because of this man's hatred for Selena, she had nowhere to hide.
If her protective suit hadn't been torn, she could have disguised herself longer.
Zaid grabbed her wrist, his eyes filled with a gentle smile. "She won't kill me. Do you see where Manuel is? Atlas, take her to Manuel. Tell him..."
Atlas approached cautiously, still confused. "Tell him what?"
"Tell him she looks exactly like Octavia's daughter."
Manuel had kept Octavia imprisoned for years, never letting anyone near her. Wouldn't he be curious about what Octavia's daughter looked like?
If he were curious and saw her, what would be the next step?
Zaid's lips curled into a smile as he leisurely took the knife from 00's hand. He had known all along that she was hiding a knife.
