Chapter 31

"Mrs. Montague?" Sofia blurted out, shocked that Selena even knew Raymond was married.

Hardly anyone in high society knew about it, and those who did looked down on Raymond's so-called wife.

Who didn't know the Fair family was just a regular family? What right did she have to marry into the Montague family?

"You mean that woman who never shows her face?" Sofia scoffed. "You probably don't know, but she hasn't spent a single Christmas with the Montague family all these years. No one in the Montague family even acknowledges her. What kind of Mrs. Montague is that?"

Some even wondered if she was so ugly she had to stay hidden.

Sofia was just stating the obvious. Selena's presence in the Montague family was so low-key that only William barely acknowledged her.

Selena didn't get mad. She just said, "Whether Mrs. Montague has spent Christmas with the family or not, she's still married to Raymond. As long as that marriage certificate exists, any woman trying to get Raymond's attention should be ashamed, right?"

Sofia realized she couldn't win this argument. If she kept going, Olivia would end up looking like a homewrecker.

Sofia's face turned red with anger as she sneered, "Aren't you the same? Don't think just because you're somewhat attractive, Raymond will fancy you. He's been in love with Olivia for ten years.

"I doubt Mr. Montague is capable of deep affection."

Just then, Raymond's cold voice came from the doorway. "Then what kind of person do you think he is?"

Selena froze. Wasn't Raymond supposed to be in a meeting?

Raymond stood there calmly. Since Sofia hadn't closed the door when she came in, he had heard their entire conversation.

Realizing this, Selena felt a bit uneasy.

Sofia, on the other hand, was thrilled and walked over to Raymond with a cold snort. "Raymond, weren't you going to a meeting?"

Raymond glanced at her indifferently and spoke softly, his voice cold. "Ms. Cooper is right. After all, I am married. It's best not to introduce me like this in the future to avoid any misunderstandings about Olivia."

Sofia lowered her head in resignation and murmured softly, "I understand."

Raymond gave Selena a deep look, put on the watch from the nearby shelf, and turned to leave.

Selena stood there, somewhat regretting arguing with someone like Sofia. It seemed she had offended Raymond.

Selena sighed, picked up the bag she had left behind, went to the innermost room to change her clothes, grabbed her keys, and headed straight for Manston Manor.

After checking out Manston Manor and its surroundings, Selena drove off. The layout and garden designs were now etched in her mind, but she still had no clue about Raymond's hobbies. The guy was a total mystery.

As she passed by a mall, she remembered it was Alice's birthday. She parked the car, planning to pick out a gift.

Unexpectedly, as soon as she reached the diamond necklace section, she spotted Carter. He was with a striking woman, and they seemed to be arguing. The woman slapped Carter hard.

Selena froze, regretting stepping in at that moment. No wonder there weren't many onlookers; the area must have been cleared out. She had just stumbled into Carter's awkward situation.

"Bastard!" The woman cursed, grabbed her bag, and ran off crying.

Feeling awkward, Selena was about to quietly leave as if she hadn't seen anything when Carter called out to her, "Penny, I didn't expect to run into you here. Shopping?"

Selena had no choice but to stop and greet him reluctantly, "Mr. Ashford."

Carter's young and handsome face bore the mark of the slap, but he didn't seem to care, maintaining his playboy demeanor. "I heard you secured Raymond's deal. Congrats."

"All thanks to your recommendation, Mr. Ashford," Selena responded.

Carter rubbed his head. "It was nothing."

"Maybe for you, Mr. Ashford, it was nothing, but for me, it was a lifesaver. I should treat you to a meal," Selena said.

"No need for a meal. If you really want to help me, there's an opportunity right now," Carter added.

"What?" Selena looked surprised, seeing Carter sigh in frustration.

"As you can see, I've been dumped by my girlfriend. Now, I need to hire you to be my date and meet someone. You don't know her anyway, so just pretend to be my girlfriend. It won't take long, at most half an hour of your time," Carter begged.

At this point, Selena couldn't refuse. After all, securing Raymond's deal was indeed thanks to Carter. She could consider this as repaying his help.

Selena nodded. "Alright."

With her agreement, Carter generously grabbed a necklace from the side and handed it to her. "This is your payment."

Selena wanted to decline, but Carter waved his hand. "As long as you help me with this, I'll introduce more orders to your studio."

Selena found it even harder to refuse.

But it wasn't until they got to the restaurant that she realized Carter wanted her to meet his mother—Raymond's aunt, Grace Montague.
