Chapter 189 Play Nice

Selena's day had been going pretty well. She wrapped up talks with the suppliers and was gearing up for her trip to Ridgefield the next day. But then, out of nowhere, a few partner companies called, sounding all hesitant.

"Ms. Fair, we're really sorry, but we just got a notice that we can't fulfill your order. You'll need to find someone else."

"But..." Selena tried to get more info, but they hung up on her.

She got four calls in a row, all canceling their orders.

Selena sat there, frowning.

First, Caterlington messed things up, causing the deal with Reid to fall through. Now Reid was still looking for her, but she didn't want to meet him and hoped the cops would handle it.

Now that Caterlington had backed off and handed Cornerstone Construction to her, everything should've been smooth. She had good talks with the suppliers over the past few days. So what was going on now?

Where did things go wrong?

Selena couldn't figure it out. Just then, the group chat for her studio blew up. Matthew asked if she had ticked someone off.

Selena replied: [What do you mean?]

Matthew messaged her privately: [Several designers in the studio had their orders canceled, and the clients specifically mentioned that you offended them. They want you to leave the studio and give up the Manston Manor project.]

This was worse than Caterlington's previous interference; it was affecting the whole studio.

Selena wasn't exactly popular in the studio, and now, because of her, orders were getting canceled. There was probably a lot of resentment brewing.

Matthew: [Selena, I've already fired Jane. I heard she's been detained by the police and has to pay a large sum of money.]

Mentioning Jane, an idea suddenly popped into Selena's mind. A name instantly came to her: Grace.

If she had offended anyone recently, it would be Grace.

And Lillian had said those things in front of Grace.

In Grace's mind, Selena was probably a woman using her looks to seduce Raymond and Carter.

Grace had always been strict with Carter and had high hopes for Raymond. Naturally, she wouldn't want these two men to be ruined by Selena.

Understanding this, Selena found it both amusing and frustrating.

Selena did have Grace's phone number, but Grace probably wouldn't want to hear her explanation.

Besides, when it came to her and Raymond, it was a complicated matter.

And knowing Grace, even though she came from the Montague Family, she never used her power to bully others. She probably confirmed her suspicions by asking around after hearing Lillian's words before taking these actions.

Selena was now in a dilemma.

If she went to Raymond, it would make her look unprofessional since this was a problem with her connections.

But who else could she turn to? Who could persuade Grace?

Going to Carter was out of the question. Lillian was already watching Selena like a hawk. If she found out Selena was contacting Carter, it would cause another uproar.

Selena felt a headache coming on, unable to comprehend how she had ended up in this predicament.

After thinking it over, she could only think of Raymond.

Raymond had a social event tonight and had a few drinks. He didn't return to the Ashbourne Manor but went to a hotel instead.

John drove the car away and would come back to pick him up in the morning.

Raymond took out his phone and engaged in some business discussions.

When he hung up, he accidentally came across a photo Carter had sent him, the painting by Selena.

He was moved by the painting.

Selena's skill was impressive. Using just black and white, she had created a beautifully rendered scene.

Raymond had always liked art and often attended exhibitions, so he could tell the artist's skill at a glance.

He remembered the night he met her in Ridgefield, painting alone under the lights.

Perhaps it was the alcohol, but the more he thought about it, the more he thought about her.

The elevator doors opened, and Raymond was surprised to see Selena standing there, holding a thermos.

She had gone back to the Ashbourne Manor, found out Raymond wasn't going there tonight, and decided to bring him some soup.

Even though Raymond had said not to bring soup anymore, she needed a favor, so she had to play nice.

"Mr. Montague," Selena greeted him obediently, standing straight.

As Raymond approached, Selena caught a whiff of alcohol on him.

It smelled like the wine from the other night in the private room, mixed with something stronger.

Raymond's eyes flickered when he saw her, and he walked to the door, asking, "What's the matter?"
