Chapter 1619 Just Like the Beginning
Atlas nodded.
Since Zaid said he didn't need to understand, he decided not to dwell on it.
His gaze finally shifted to Isolde.
Isolde was lying on the ground, slowly extending a hand.
Even though she wasn't looking at Atlas, she knew exactly where he was standing.
In her palm was a small, living insect.
The last time Atlas had caught an insect, he brought it to Zaid, who promptly crushed it. Since then, Atlas had been trying to find another one but had no luck.
Now, Isolde had one. It seemed she had prepared the last one too, but Atlas hadn't known.
Seeing the blood-stained insect, a spark of excitement lit up Atlas's face. He reached out to take it, but Zaid stopped him. "Don't touch it, it's dirty."
It was covered in blood.
Atlas obediently stopped, but his eyes remained fixed on the insect.
Isolde held it out for a while, but when he didn't take it, she slowly let go, finally glancing in his direction.
The last thing she saw was his innocent, bewildered eyes.
Yes, he had always been like this, understanding nothing.
Just like in the beginning.
The insect, still alive, struggled on the ground before crawling away.
Atlas didn't look at Isolde again. Instead, he turned to the monitor behind him.
The monitor still displayed scenes of slaughter. He wanted to ask Zaid who he was watching, but sensing Zaid's foul mood, he quietly dragged a chair over and sat down.
After three minutes, Zaid finally spoke. "She's dead. Are you upset?"
"Who?"
The question made Zaid fall silent. He suddenly felt his question was pointless.
Why did he even ask? Someone like Atlas, living without burdens, was the happiest. He wouldn't be driven to prove anything by someone else's words.
The more someone tries to prove something, the more they care about others' opinions.
Zaid chuckled softly. "No one. Just a pitiful person. Keep an eye on the monitor for me. Find Raymond. Neither he nor his people are leaving here."
"Zaid, what about you? Are you leaving?"
Though he was slow, he understood an earthquake was imminent. Was Zaid planning not to survive?
If Zaid died, he didn't want to live either.
Just as he was about to say something, the insect suddenly flew up and landed near his hand.
Taking advantage of Zaid's distraction, he carefully slipped the insect into his pocket.
He still really wanted the insect and the leaves.
Meanwhile, the central hall had descended into chaos. Researchers were fleeing everywhere, while the test subjects rampaged through the crowd like weapons.
Raymond spotted Clifton heading their way.
Clifton was skilled. With all the test chambers open, he immediately went to Lawrence's chamber.
Lawrence was still hanging, but a girl was protecting him well.
Other test subjects tried to harm Lawrence, but her fierce growls scared them off.
Raymond arrived just then, with Calla in tow.
"This is the most formidable subject besides Number 8. She doesn't have a name yet and is the only successfully modified female. Her genes are excellent. Her future children would be geniuses, so the researchers have been trying to find her a mate. But she only kills, showing no interest in the men put in her chamber. It seems she likes this man, even protecting him. This must be a new emotion for her."
Calla's pupils contracted slightly when she saw Lawrence's face, her brow furrowing.
He looked familiar, but she couldn't recall where she'd seen him.
Clifton moved to rescue Lawrence, but the girl lunged at him, engaging him in a fight.
Though Clifton was skilled, he was quickly overpowered.
Raymond stepped forward, unlocking the chains. Lawrence was lowered to the ground.
The girl, seemingly triggered, kicked Clifton away and rushed to Raymond.
Raymond dodged her attack, but she was relentless. He pushed Lawrence forward, using him as a shield.
The girl immediately stopped, glaring angrily at Raymond.
Lawrence woke up, weak.
He looked at the girl, and her eyes lit up with joy.
She couldn't speak well yet, but she quickly moved to his side, grabbing his hand and kissing it.
