Chapter 200 Is That Really a Merit?

Lucas couldn't help but look away, feeling like he couldn't face Raymond.

Raymond had this aura, like he was on a whole different level.

Raymond just gave a quick, indifferent glance and then followed the president into the hall.

The Ridgefield project was a big deal, with billions on the line, so Cornerstone Construction was all in.

Lots of companies had pitched to the Montague Group, but out of nowhere last night, they picked Cornerstone, saying they wanted to talk details.

Raymond showed up in person today. The president wondered if it had anything to do with Raymond's house at Manston Manor, which Cornerstone was also building.

Thinking about it, the president figured he should be extra nice to Selena. After all, she was the one who picked Cornerstone, landing them this gig.

The president gave Raymond a quick tour, finally stopping at the middle floor.

"Mr. Montague, we'll have our meeting in the conference room. This way, please," he said.

Just as Raymond was about to enter the conference room, he heard a mid-level manager nearby chewing someone out. It was Lucas.

Even though it was Saturday, some roles at Cornerstone required weekend work.

The manager barked, "How'd you mess this up, Lucas? How could you get this data wrong? You need to hit the books and get better. Everyone else here is more educated than you, so don't blame me for calling you out."

Lucas silently cursed the manager. The guy had a thing against people with less education and mocked Lucas almost daily after finding out about his background.

Because of this, Lucas had missed several promotions, which the manager handed to others.

But the year-end bonus at Cornerstone was pretty sweet. If it weren't for that, Lucas would've bailed a long time ago.

Raymond stood nearby, watching.

Lucas was about 5'8", probably a few years into his career, just an average employee. If he had any redeeming quality, it was that he looked relatively clean, but just barely.

But was that really a merit?

The president felt awkward and quickly signaled the manager to back off.

Seeing a bunch of execs, the manager got scared and shoved Lucas back into the department.

The president quickly explained, "Mr. Montague, it's just a routine scolding. We're pretty strict with our employees at Cornerstone."

Raymond didn't say anything and walked into the conference room.

For the next hour, the president and a bunch of Cornerstone execs talked about the upcoming project, while Montague Group employees next to Raymond checked the details.

Raymond sat with his hands slightly crossed in front of him, looking indifferent.

But John, sitting closest to him, noticed Raymond seemed lost in thought.

After a while, in the middle of the meeting, Raymond's phone rang. He signaled the execs to keep going and stepped out to take the call.

It was Alex, talking about some trivial stuff.

Raymond listened for a bit and then hung up.

Passing by the break room, he heard a familiar voice, "That idiot manager is out to get me. If it weren't for the year-end bonus, I'd have quit already. Why is there still educational discrimination?"

It was Lucas, talking to another guy, probably a junior staff member too.

For some reason, Raymond walked in.

Lucas was mid-rant when he saw someone come in and immediately shut up.

When he looked up and saw it was Raymond, he instantly felt uneasy.

Guys have their pride, so when they saw a higher-up step in, they suddenly felt small.
