Chapter 1409 It Seems You Really Have No Conscience
Lawrence's voice dripped with venom. "Selena, I'm taking you to see Tessa now. You will apologize to her in person, and then I might grant you a merciful end."
Selena almost laughed at the absurdity, but Lawrence immediately grabbed her by the throat.
"Tessa is traumatized, and you still find this amusing? You truly have no conscience."
She met his gaze coldly, her lips twisting into a bitter smile. "Mr. Smith, I pity your sister. Thank goodness she never made it back to the Smith Villa to discover her heritage. Seeing you act as an accomplice to this cruelty would have disgusted her."
Lawrence's hand trembled slightly, something sharp piercing his heart.
But he reassured himself that this was just Selena's silver tongue at work—her complete lack of remorse for what she'd done to Tessa.
"Let's see if you remain so eloquent later."
He released her and sat silently nearby, refusing to engage further.
Selena didn't bother speaking to him either; every word exchanged only increased her irritation.
The car soon stopped at Tessa's residence. Security guards escorted Selena out while Lawrence went ahead to check on Tessa.
Tessa had anticipated his arrival. She sat on the floor hugging her knees, her eyes swollen, hair disheveled—the picture of a broken woman.
Seeing her condition, Lawrence rushed to her side.
"Tessa!" he called out.
She slowly looked up, fresh tears streaming down her face.
She choked out, "Lawrence, I'm so scared. Every time I close my eyes, I see those men's faces. I'm terrified. Dad refuses to see me... what am I supposed to do? I want to go home. I just want things to be like before, when you all protected me, Lawrence..."
As she spoke, Tessa noticed Selena being brought in by the guards. Her body began to tremble.
She was ecstatic! She had hoped Lawrence would eliminate Selena, but hadn't expected him to act so quickly.
Her cheeks flushed with excitement. She wanted nothing more than to smash a vase over Selena's head, to watch her collapse in a pool of blood, to witness the life slowly drain from her. What a delightful thought.
Lawrence, however, misinterpreted her trembling as fear.
He embraced Tessa protectively. "Don't be afraid, Tessa. I've brought Selena here specifically. Whatever punishment you think she deserves, just say the word. I'll do exactly as you ask."
Tessa began sobbing again, burying her face against his chest, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
Watching this scene, Selena felt a strange, bitter ache.
"I want her dead! Will you do this for me? Please help me—you're the only one who can. My chest hurts so much..."
As she spoke, Tessa clutched her chest with one hand while waving the other in the air frantically.
"Get away! Get away! Don't do this to me!"
Her performance of complete mental breakdown only deepened Lawrence's sympathy.
Any hesitation Lawrence might have felt vanished instantly.
"Alright. I understand." His eyes turned cold with resolve. "Take Selena to the backyard and throw her in the river."
The backyard opened onto a river, its center infamously deep. Local legend claimed that anyone who fell in would be dragged beneath the surface, their bodies entombed in crystal-like formations, standing forever in the depths—never to be recovered.
The water near the shore wasn't as deep, so to eliminate any chance of survival, they bound Selena's hands and feet.
The guards even locked her inside an iron cage.
Once submerged, Selena would have absolutely no chance of survival.
Tessa, supported by Lawrence, came to the backyard. When she saw Selena locked in the cage, her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
Selena's gaze remained calm. She glanced briefly at Lawrence, then looked away, her expression betraying nothing.
Lawrence felt a sudden tightness in his chest, an inexplicable unease washing over him.
