Chapter 1604 Breaking Out of the Cage to Escape
Hearing his words, Zaid was puzzled.
Atlas had once wanted that badge, but now he didn't even reach out to touch it.
Instead, he fiddled with it in his palm for a moment before pinning it to Zaid's chest with a solemn expression.
Zaid suddenly felt like he couldn't breathe; his heart felt like it was being crushed.
Something inside him was trying to break free. He took a deep breath, glanced down at the badge on his chest, and swatted Atlas's hand away.
Atlas shot him a cautious look, then stood up and walked towards the door.
After the door closed, Zaid felt a wave of irritation, an indescribable frustration enveloping him.
He took a deep breath, grabbed a cigarette from nearby, and just as he lit it, a loud roar erupted from outside. It sounded like a wild beast's roar.
He flicked the ash off his cigarette and got up to check the hall.
The hall was in chaos; Experiment 8 had been released, and gunfire rang out. Along with the gunfire, a white mist began to rise and quickly spread, soon shrouding the space in a fog.
The researchers in the hall panicked instantly, curling up in corners, terrified of being targeted by the deadly weapon.
The weapon hated researchers the most; at least ten had died at its hands.
Without the protection of glass walls, the unarmed researchers were like ants in its eyes.
Some people desperately tried to flee, but the chaos only intensified wherever they went.
Raymond initially intended to escape with the crowd, but then heard Clifton's voice. "What the hell is that?"
Each small space was separated by a coded lock, but this weapon was so powerful that it dismantled the locks with its fists, like a primitive beast.
Raymond's eyes lit up, and he instinctively moved closer to Experiment 8.
Clifton was pushed back a few steps by the experiment; he had never seen someone so strong, and it looked like a teenager.
The experiment dismantled countless locks along the way, and the short-circuited wires began to spark, soon igniting a fire.
Raymond grabbed Clifton and tossed him a handkerchief. "Cover your nose."
"What's this?"
Before he could finish, Raymond put a mask over his mouth. "Time's almost up."
Clifton saw that Raymond had a dozen more masks in his pocket, and they had a strange smell, clearly soaked in some solution.
Remembering Raymond's warning from the night before, Clifton quickly used both the handkerchief and the mask.
Raymond had learned from Calla about the effects of certain drugs and how to compress them into gas.
Earlier, he had placed over twenty bottles of compressed gas above the ventilation ducts, and with the airflow from the machines, the gas would soon spread everywhere.
He hadn't dared to do this before, fearing the ducts didn't reach the upper levels, which would ruin the plan.
But now, knowing the higher-ups were all in Vistalia, he had no such worries.
The compressed gas was a hallucinogen, making people see their worst fears and fall into terror. Soon, screams and wails echoed everywhere.
"Clifton, follow me," Raymond said.
Experiment 8 headed towards another connection point. That connection led to where the beasts were kept, the most ferocious ones used by the research base to discipline escapees.
Discipline was a euphemism; they actually fed disobedient people to the beasts. There were over thirty beasts there, always kept hungry.
Raymond reached the massive cage and saw that the guards had inhaled the gas and were trapped in nightmares.
He grabbed one of them and placed his eyes in front of the scanner. The gate opened.
Clifton's pupils shrank as he saw the roaring animals.
"Raymond, if these beasts get out, most of the research base's people will die."
But before he could finish, a cold voice echoed through the space.
"Everyone, stop moving."
After that, a piercing alarm sounded. Raymond frowned, realizing the alarm had some kind of power; those trapped in nightmares instantly woke up, seemingly unaware of what had happened.
The voice spoke again. "You have ten minutes to restore order. Someone will come to fix the broken gate and find the cause of the chaos."
