Chapter 206 A Clever Trick Backfires

Selena's face was a blank slate. She picked up the painting on the table and said in a flat tone, "Did Mr. Wright send this?"

Reid's face lit up with a hint of pride. His company was way bigger than the Fair family's, which had just wrapped up its second round of financing. He'd never even thought about teaming up with them before.

Reid had no clue about the Fair family's secret marriage deal with the Montagues. His arrogance had made him lose touch with old classmates.

Under police pressure, Reid used his connections to dig into Selena's father, who turned out to be an old classmate, making things easier.

The Fair family made their money selling paint, with James starting from a street stall. Reid's home renovation business made them perfect partners.

To show he was serious, Reid brought an ancient painting, claiming a work-related misunderstanding with Selena.

James, knowing Selena was an interior designer, thought it was no big deal and happily accepted the painting.

"Yeah. It's my first time visiting an old classmate, so I had to show some sincerity. Penny, we've been working together for three years. I admit I misunderstood things before. Considering my good relationship with your father, why don't we just let bygones be bygones?"

Selena looked at the painting, not dumb enough to miss that Reid was trying to use $30 million to settle the previous incident.

She had already blocked him, but Reid had found a way to get to her.

Before she could speak, James had already asked Beatrice to serve Reid some tea.

"Selena, he's right. You've been working together for three years and know each other well. Why not sit down and talk things out after tonight?"

James tried to pull Selena to sit down, but she wasn't having it.

"Dad, do you even know what our misunderstanding is? You're so eager for me to forgive him. If someone offered you $30 million to sell your daughter, would you do it?"

Years of pent-up resentment burst out, and Selena's words were harsh.

After all, James had previously arranged a marriage alliance with the Montague family, which was basically selling his daughter.

James's face darkened immediately. Being contradicted by his daughter in front of a classmate made him feel humiliated.

A man's pride was crucial, especially for a businessman.

In his anger, James raised his hand to slap her, but Selena caught his wrist, stopping him.

"Dad, I've always been mindful of your health and thought you'd consider my feelings. But Reid violated our contract first. When I found another company to work with, he got angry and sent kidnappers to assault me. If someone hadn't arrived in time to save me, do you think you'd still see me now? And you want me to forgive him just because of a $30 million painting?"

As Selena spoke, her eyes reddened.

But she calmly looked at James and slowly lowered his hand.

"Doctor said you shouldn't get agitated. I thought I was coming tonight to meet Mom's friend, but it turns out it's about this. Don't tell me Reid was also Mom's old classmate. If Mom knew what happened to me, she would help me. No one could hurt me if she were here."

She took a deep breath and put down the ancient painting.

"I have nothing more to say. You've disappointed me more than twice. I have work tomorrow, so I gotta go."

As Selena was about to leave, Beatrice, who was still pouring tea, spoke up, "How can you talk to your dad like that? Since Reid is here, it means nothing happened. Isn't there room for negotiation?"

Selena sneered and walked out with large strides.

Beatrice rolled her eyes and placed a cup of tea in James's hand.

James, with a stern expression, immediately knocked the tea away.

"So, in your mind, what happened to my daughter is just a minor issue?"

James, with a cold face, grabbed the painting from the table and threw it at Reid's face.

If he had known the misunderstanding was this severe, he wouldn't have let Reid in.

"Get out!"

"You."

"Get out!"

Reid's face changed, and he couldn't stay any longer.

As soon as he left, James sat down, trembling with anger.

Beatrice was also uneasy. She had been too complacent, thinking she could stir up trouble when she saw Selena and James arguing, forgetting that James still valued his daughter.

Now, things had backfired, and James would likely feel guilty towards Selena.

This was not a good sign.
