Chapter 105 He Absolutely Despised Her
Raymond's chest was pressed up against Selena's back, his arm wrapped around her waist.
The elevator had stopped on some random floor, and now they just had to wait for the rescue team to show up.
He should've let her go, but neither of them moved.
Selena hadn't really noticed how close they were. With just the two of them there, leaning on each other felt safer, especially since there was only a handrail on this side.
She even wanted to get a bit closer, feeling more secure.
It wasn't until Raymond's breath brushed her ear that Selena realized just how close they were.
Through the reflective elevator walls, she could see Raymond holding her completely in his arms.
Selena almost instinctively wanted to move away, but seeing her hesitation, Raymond's hand moved faster than his mind.
"Don't move," he said firmly, "just wait for help."
Selena lowered her eyes, calming her breath, trying not to focus on the distance between them.
Raymond had already pressed the emergency call button, and the building should've gotten the notification.
Elevator falls were rare, and Raymond frowned, feeling like nothing good ever happened when he was with Selena.
Selena was facing away from Raymond, exposing the back of her neck.
The human neck was naturally fragile and sensitive, and Raymond's breath on it felt like it was biting into her nervous system, sending a shiver down her spine.
Selena tried hard to reject this feeling, but fragments of memories from that night flooded back.
Raymond felt the same, in the confined space, with their heartbeats synchronized and skin brushing against each other.
But Raymond rationally analyzed that this might be the psychological "suspension bridge effect."
The suspension bridge effect is when a person's heart rate increases when they're nervously crossing a suspension bridge. If they meet someone at that moment, they might mistakenly interpret the increased heart rate as attraction. This physiological response could lead them to develop romantic feelings for the other person.
So, the moment the elevator fell and Raymond pulled Selena into his arms, the fleeting heartbeat was probably because of this.
Thinking of this, Raymond loosened his hold on Selena, slowly increasing the distance between them.
Selena also breathed a sigh of relief and politely said, "Thank you, Mr. Montague."
After speaking, she straightened her back, listening carefully to the sounds outside.
The phone rang again; it was Alice calling. For some reason, she seemed unusually anxious tonight.
"Selena, I'm already at the entrance of Stellar Heights. Where are you?" Alice asked.
Selena frowned. How did Alice know she was at Stellar Heights tonight? And wasn't her health poor? Why was she out of the hospital again?
Alice was indeed waiting at the entrance of Stellar Heights, driving a Lamborghini that James had bought for her.
James had repeatedly told Alice not to drive alone, saying he would arrange a driver for her, but whenever Alice had the chance, she would check Raymond's location and follow him quietly. As long as he was willing to look at her, she was willing to do anything.
Selena hadn't come down yet, so Alice couldn't help but call again.
At this moment, Selena was still in the elevator, rubbing her forehead and saying, "The elevator malfunctioned. You don't have to wait for me. Just go; your health isn't good."
Alice looked at the tall building, feeling unwilling but unable to find an excuse to stay, so she reluctantly agreed.
"Okay, Selena, don't worry. Dad is fine; Mom is there taking care of him. He's probably just emotional," Alice said.
Selena knew James's condition well. Since the doctor had promised to keep it confidential, no one else knew that James was in the late stages of liver cancer and had only a year left.
Thinking of this, Selena's eyelashes drooped.
"You should spend more time with Dad," Selena said.
Alice parked the car in a hidden spot, ensuring it wouldn't be discovered, and agreed, "I know, Selena. I'll go now."
After hanging up the phone, Selena actually wanted to ask Raymond in person what exactly John had said to make James so emotional.
But what right did she have to ask Raymond? Maybe John had just told some truths.
Back then, the Fair Family had intervened, directly cutting off Raymond and Olivia's relationship. He hadn't bankrupted the Fair Family, already considering William's sake.
As for Selena, his nominal wife, Raymond absolutely despised her.
