Chapter 32
Selena stood at the restaurant entrance, feeling totally conflicted.
Carter was right behind her and whispered, "See that woman by the window? That's my mom, and she's super mad. If I survive today, you'll be my hero."
Selena's mouth twitched, and she instinctively wanted to duck her head, but Grace had already spotted her.
Carter stiffened under Grace's gaze.
"Sorry," he muttered, then wrapped his arm around Selena's waist and led her toward Grace.
Grace gave them both a once-over.
Carter, ever the gentleman, pulled out a chair for Selena, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Mom, this is my girlfriend. She's an interior designer. You can call her Penny."
Selena's mind went blank, and it was only after she sat down that she started to think straight again.
Judging by Grace's expression, she probably didn't recognize her.
Selena breathed a sigh of relief. She was about to cut ties with the Montague family anyway. For now, she had to play along to help Carter.
"Mrs. Ashford, hello," Selena greeted.
Selena's features were already delicate and well-defined. With her healthy skin and cool demeanor, she was clearly different from the pretentious women Carter had liked before.
Grace's scrutinizing gaze softened, a look of satisfaction crossing her eyes. "I thought you'd just bring any woman to fool me, Carter. You've grown up."
Carter had indeed planned to bring just any woman, even asking his ex-girlfriend for help. But he had said the wrong thing while buying a gift and got slapped on the spot.
Luckily, the slap wasn't too hard, and there was no immediate sign of a handprint.
"Mom, Penny is really talented. You know Raymond's Manston Manor, right? She's the one designing it now. So don't worry, I'm not involved with any disreputable women," Carter said.
Being chosen by Raymond was a testament to Selena's personal ability.
Grace grew more satisfied and liked her more and more. "This is a meeting gift."
Grace took off a bracelet from her wrist and handed it over.
Selena didn't dare accept it. "Mrs. Ashford, there's no need. I didn't bring any gifts today."
Grace gave Carter a reproachful look. "Carter, didn't you buy her any gift?"
Judging by Selena's attire, the fabric was good but the design was simple, and her bag was from a brand under three hundred dollars.
Grace directly put the bracelet on Selena's wrist. "Take it. This is for my future daughter-in-law. Don't feel pressured. I know Carter's temperament well. If you're worried you won't make it to marriage, it's okay. Even if you break up, the gift is still yours."
Selena pressed her lips together, planning to give it back to Carter later.
Grace looked at Carter with satisfaction. "Seems like sending you to the Montague Group was the right call."
"Mom, I came today to tell you that the Montague Group is too busy. I hardly have any time to spend with Penny. I don't want to stay at the Montague Group anymore. Can you talk to Raymond? Really, if you help me this time, I promise you'll have a grandchild within two years," Carter said.
Grace had sent Carter to the Montague Group to keep him away from those women.
Now that Grace knew Carter had found a good girlfriend, she naturally didn't want them to break up because of work.
Grace turned to Selena, her tone gentle. "Penny, can you help me keep an eye on Carter?"
Selena nodded, her expression calm but sincere. "Mrs. Ashford, don't worry. Carter is actually very sincere and willing to help others."
With this, Grace smiled and said to Carter, "Alright, you don't have to go to the Montague Group later. You young people should go out and have fun, build your relationship."
Carter's eyes lit up. Today's goal was finally achieved!
After a harmonious meal, Carter said goodbye to Grace and pulled Selena away by the wrist.
Once in the car, Carter let go of Selena. "Sorry, my mom really doesn't like my previous girlfriends. She only ever liked my ex. I originally planned to have her play along."
Selena took off the bracelet. "Here, take this back. I really can't accept it. Judging by the material, it must be very expensive. And Ms. Ashford said it's for your future wife."
Seeing Selena's insistence, Carter took it back. "Don't worry, I'll introduce you to more projects later. I'll also have you design my properties. By the way, where do you live? I'll take you home."
Selena gave her apartment address.
What they didn't know was that on their way back, Grace had gone straight to the Montague Group and was now sitting in Raymond's office.
"Aunt Grace, what brings you here suddenly?" Raymond asked.
Grace sat down on the sofa, her eyes still smiling as she thought of the Selena she had just seen. "Sending Carter to you was the right decision. I'm very pleased with the girlfriend he found."
"Does Carter have a girlfriend again?" Raymond frowned as Grace continued, "I just met them for the first time. I didn't ask in detail. Carter said the girl is designing a house for you. Have you interacted with her? How is her family background and ability?"
