Chapter 188 Misunderstood
Lucas decided to drop the topic and zero in on the job Philip had mentioned.
"Thirty grand? Just for showing up now and then?" Lucas gulped. He'd thought about snagging a rich woman himself, but he didn't have Philip's looks.
No wealthy lady would go for him.
"Philip, is this for real?" Lucas asked.
Philip plopped down on the steps, stretched out his legs, and leaned back, looking all chill.
Philip was seriously good-looking. Even Lucas, as a guy, felt a twinge of envy. No wonder rich women flocked to him.
And the Harper family only had one daughter, Shelley. If Philip could marry into that family, wouldn't the Harper fortune be his someday?
"Yeah, you know how easy it is to fool Shelley," Philip said, squinting his eyes. "But her friend’s a tougher nut to crack. Just take the thirty grand and don’t mess this up for me."
Lucas needed the cash. After mulling it over, he went inside to change.
Meanwhile, Shelley and Selena were waiting at a café.
In less than an hour, Philip showed up with Lucas.
Selena noticed Lucas looked pretty average, simple, and definitely not from their social circle—perfect.
The plan was quickly set, and Selena didn't hesitate to transfer thirty grand to Lucas's account. She also gave him her current address.
When Lucas heard it was Rose Garden, he got a bit excited.
That’s where his boss lived, a place worth tens of millions. Rich folks sure had rich friends.
Lucas had some thoughts but remembered Philip's advice and didn’t dare act rashly. "Ms. Fair, don’t worry. I’ll play the husband role well. Just text me, and I’ll be there."
Selena said, "Don’t call me Ms. Fair, just call me Penny."
She then asked about Lucas's job and was surprised to learn he worked at Cornerstone Construction, a company she was currently working with.
But Lucas was just a low-level employee, while Selena dealt with the big shots.
After confirming everything, Selena felt relieved.
Once they parted ways, she debated whether to go back to Rose Garden or Ashbourne Manor.
Rose Garden had Lillian and the woman tangled up with Jacob, while Ashbourne Manor had the elusive Raymond.
Selena rubbed her temples, feeling worn out.
After much thought, she decided to head back to Rose Garden.
Luckily, she didn’t run into Lillian, but when she opened her door, she found a sticky note on it.
It read, "Bitch, I know you live here. If you don’t tell me where Jacob is, I’ll make you pay."
This was from the woman tangled up with Jacob, who looked like she could really cause trouble.
But Selena couldn’t worry about that now. She still had to confirm all the suppliers' goods tonight and then head to Ridgefield ASAP.
What Selena didn’t know was that Grace was already sitting in Raymond’s office. "I heard you have a thing with that designer?"
Grace’s words were careful, but she was basically asking if he had any shady dealings.
After all, Raymond had a wife at home. Even if he didn’t care for his wife, if William found out, the whole Montague family would be in chaos.
Raymond looked at the documents in front of him and didn’t even look up. "Who said that?"
Grace replied, "Carter’s new girlfriend. Carter brought Penny to me before, and I didn’t expect she was already married."
There was a cold edge to her words, reminding Raymond that if there was something going on, it needed to end to avoid a scandal.
She continued sternly, "Raymond, even if you don’t care for your wife, she was chosen by your grandfather. You know the consequences of messing around."
"Grace, it was just a one-time thing when I was drunk," Raymond said defensively.
Grace sensed something was off. Raymond, who had become the president of the Montague Group at a young age, wouldn’t get drunk and have a one-night stand unless something was in the drink.
Grace sneered. It seemed she had underestimated Selena.
Grace got the name of Selena’s studio and, after leaving the Montague Group, called her people to block Selena’s collaborations.
Selena’s ways of securing work and getting involved with Carter were impressive, but this was the end of the line for her.
