Chapter 184 Out of Character
For a second, Selena thought about just coming clean to Raymond. It'd save her from sneaking around and lying to Carter all the time.
But then she remembered Raymond's attitude towards the Fair Family and the fact that she was designing his house. Keeping things smooth between them was crucial to avoid any awkward run-ins.
Plus, Raymond had helped her a lot lately. If things went south, she'd be the one losing out.
Feeling totally drained, both mentally and physically, she got up and said wearily, "Fiona, I'm not feeling great tonight. I think I'll skip dinner. No need to call me."
Fiona looked worried. "But, Ms. Fair, I used that excuse last time, and Mr. Montague wasn't too happy about it."
Selena forced a smile. "It's fine. There's no fixing our relationship anyway."
To be clear, it wasn't her relationship with him, but his relationship with his wife.
If Selena tried to act like the perfect wife, it would only make him more annoyed.
Raymond wanted her out of his life, just like the night she borrowed eight million dollars from him. He transferred the money without a second thought and reminded her to know her place.
If she'd approached him as his wife from the start, he wouldn't have even met with her.
Fiona hesitated but eventually sighed.
Later that evening, when Raymond walked into the villa, he casually tossed his suit on the coat rack.
The house smelled amazing, like dinner was ready. He'd just wrapped up a meeting and was feeling a bit worn out.
Fiona quickly approached him, not daring to slack off. "Mr. Montague."
Raymond had been dropping by lately, but it was always on his terms.
After all, William would sometimes do surprise inspections, so Raymond had to stay a few nights to keep up appearances.
"Dinner's ready, Mr. Montague," Fiona said.
She then instructed the servants to bring out the dishes. As Raymond sat down, he thought he heard a few dog barks.
He frowned and looked around. "Where is she?"
Even though he didn't like Selena, Raymond wasn't the type to deliberately exclude someone from dinner.
"Ms. Fair said she's not feeling well," Fiona replied.
Raymond frowned. From what he knew about Selena, even if she wasn't feeling well, she'd still come down just to see him.
The determination in her eyes was hard to fake, making people uncomfortable, like she'd cling to him even if she was on her deathbed.
So using this excuse twice in a row to avoid him seemed out of character for the Selena he knew.
But Raymond had no interest in digging into the matter with his so-called wife.
Upstairs, Selena was working on her computer.
She'd gotten the base prices from other material suppliers, but for the sandalwood flooring, which needed to be ordered three years in advance, she was still stuck.
Selena figured the flooring needed to be installed in six months, so she had to find a way to get back to Ridgefield soon.
Plus, because the sandalwood flooring was in high demand, the person in charge at Ridgefield was super cautious and rarely took orders from anyone other than regular partners. Selena had to go in person to figure out how to persuade them.
But there was no rush to leave tonight. Even if she left for Ridgefield now, it wouldn't make much difference compared to going a few days later.
Selena carefully reviewed the material lists again to make sure nothing was missing, then started looking at the renderings on her computer, thinking about what needed to be tweaked.
Raymond had helped her so many times, so she felt compelled to design the house at Manston Manor perfectly.
But just as her fingers touched the keyboard, she heard a dog bark outside.
She paused, quickly stood up, and walked to the window to see Max playing in the garden.
Didn't Fiona lock him up? How did he get out?
Now that Raymond was back, if he found Max, the consequences would be unimaginable.
