Chapter 259 I Hope You Also Know Your Place
Lucas hung up the phone, flashing Mason a smug grin.
Mason still looked a bit doubtful.
"Did you get someone to pretend to be Selena? How on earth do you even know her?"
Lucas really wanted to brag that he was her husband now, but since it was a lie, it would be super embarrassing if it got exposed. So, he kept his mouth shut.
Mason's attitude shifted as he eyed Lucas.
"Alright, Lucas, if you can really get Selena to not make a big deal out of this, I'll double your salary from five to ten grand."
Lucas had been with the company for ages. Sure, he didn't have the best education, but he was pretty good at his job. Still, Mason always kept him down, and he never got a raise.
Talking about salaries at work was a no-go. Even though he didn't know exactly what others made, he was sure he was at the bottom.
The coworker who always griped about the boss with him had already gotten a raise to six grand.
Seeing Lucas hesitate, Mason sneered. "What, I'm offering you a huge raise, and you're still not on board? Do you know how many people with your education level get this kind of deal?"
Lucas took a deep breath, cursed Mason a few more times in his head, and then looked up.
"Got it. I'll head downstairs now and talk to her."
Mason quickly left the corridor, only to bump into the president of Cornerstone Construction in the elevator. The president was sweating and griping to his assistant.
"What's going on? Why is Raymond suddenly visiting? If Selena shows up and runs into him, he'll figure everything out."
It was the first time the president had faced something like this. Raymond was a big deal, someone every company in the country wanted to work with. If this project tanked, Cornerstone Construction would be a laughingstock, especially since the news of the collaboration was already out.
Lucas stood to the side, a glint in his eye, and then spoke up respectfully, "Sir, I know Selena. I'm heading downstairs to meet her now. I'll try to keep her in the lobby for a bit. You can get Mr. Montague out of here before they cross paths."
The president, who was super stressed, raised an eyebrow at hearing a regular employee speak up.
"Alright, if you can pull that off, I'll promote you."
Lucas's cheeks flushed with excitement. It seemed the higher-ups had been fed up with Mason for a while.
If he got promoted, he'd probably take Mason's spot.
No wonder Mason had been stuck in that position for years; the bosses were just waiting for the right moment to replace him.
Lucas's eyes lit up with joy, and he quickly nodded.
After stepping out of the elevator, he spotted the intense-looking guy he saw last time. Raymond was chilling on the sofa by the floor-to-ceiling window, his assistant standing next to him, reporting something. He had a Bluetooth headset on, probably in a quick meeting, which explained why he hadn't gone upstairs yet.
The president of Cornerstone Construction hurried over, and Raymond took off his Bluetooth headset, wrapping up the brief meeting.
"Why didn't you let us know you were coming? Please, come in."
Raymond's workaholic rep was well-known in the Montague Group. Whenever he had a moment, he'd personally handle a lot of stuff.
Plus, the deal with Cornerstone Construction involved the government, so there was no room for mistakes.
Several high-level execs from the Montague Group were there too, each holding a document. Looked like they were making some last-minute tweaks.
The president quickly led everyone to the lower levels for a tour, all the while stressing about the Selena situation.
Lucas had already made it outside and saw Selena walking up the steps. He quickly went to meet her.
"Selena."
Selena nodded, looking pretty annoyed because of the construction issues at Cornerstone Construction.
"Lucas, how did you know I was coming here?"
As they walked to the lobby, Lucas pointed to the guest sofa by the floor-to-ceiling window. "Let's sit over there. I'll explain everything."
Selena frowned, unsure of his intentions, but followed him and sat down, straightening her back.
This was Lucas's first time dealing with Selena at work. Her presence was so strong that he felt a bit intimidated sitting across from her.
"Are you planning to demand compensation from Cornerstone Construction this time?"
Selena raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "Are you here to negotiate for them? Lucas, even though I hired you, when it comes to my work, I don't show any mercy. No one can plead for you, so I hope you understand your position."
Lucas felt embarrassed. He hadn't expected Selena to be so tough at work.
Before he could say anything, she had already left him speechless.
