Chapter 65 Stirring Up Trouble
Selena had just walked in when she heard a dog barking. From a distance, she saw a snow-white blur racing towards her, circling her excitedly.
She looked down and patted its head. "Max, have you been a good boy while I was gone?"
Fiona Taylor stepped out of the house, wearing an apron. She looked about fifty, gentle and honest.
"Ms. Fair, he was quite the troublemaker while you were away," Fiona said. "Just yesterday, he went to the fish pond and caught all the fish. I had to debone them and cook the fish for him."
Selena chuckled and ruffled Max's fur. "You little glutton."
Max was a six-year-old sheepdog, and he'd been with Selena for as long as she could remember.
Selena's apartment wasn't ideal for a dog, but luckily, William had given her this villa. Since she rarely visited, she left Max in Fiona's care.
After playing with Max for a bit, Selena dragged her suitcase into the hall.
Fiona looked surprised. "Ms. Fair, are you finally moving in?"
"My apartment got broken into, so I'll be staying here for a few days," Selena replied.
Fiona looked both surprised and worried. "Did you call the police? It's dangerous for a girl to live alone. Ms. Fair, why don't you just stay here? Mr. Montague asked me to take care of you, but in the past three years, you've hardly come over. It's hard for me to answer."
"Until I find a new place, I'll have to stay here," Selena said, teasing Max with one hand, a faint smile on her lips.
Max lay on the ground, wagging his tail, his eyes sparkling.
Meanwhile, Raymond had just dropped off Selena when he got a call from William. "Raymond, my paperwork is almost done, and I'll be back soon."
Raymond rubbed his forehead. "I know, Grandpa. Take care of yourself."
William added, "If you really care about me, hurry up and have a child with Selena. Maybe that will help me recover faster. Words of concern are useless."
Raymond couldn't help but think of the elegant handwriting on that agreement, Selena Fair.
The Fairs were so greedy, yet Selena's handwriting seemed quite refined, a contradiction.
"I'll do my best," Raymond said, his voice devoid of emotion.
William sighed in relief, thinking Raymond was genuinely trying. "Good, when I return, you and Selena must have dinner with me often."
Raymond frowned, thought for a moment, and tried to speak as gently as possible. "Grandpa, the Montague Group's work is very busy. I just got back, and there are new businesses to expand and internal policies to reform. I probably won't have much time."
William asked, "Then tell me honestly, what do you think of Selena?"
"She's fine," Raymond said, his answer perfunctory as a video call invitation popped up on his computer. "I have an online meeting now, Grandpa. Let's talk when you get back."
After hanging up, Raymond rubbed his forehead again, worried that without discussing it with Selena, their act might fall apart.
Thinking of the Fair family's actions, he frowned but didn't call Selena. Instead, he accepted the meeting invitation.
If Selena couldn't handle this, then the Montague Group had no reason to continue helping the Fair family with their second round of financing.
After all, the agreement was to act lovingly. If they failed, it would be her breach of contract first.
As the meeting was ending, the car pulled up at the hotel.
Raymond had just gotten out of the car when he heard a surprised female voice from the hotel lobby, "Mr. Montague."
Raymond looked in the direction of the voice and found the person somewhat unfamiliar.
Jane was full of excitement. She had hoped Selena would introduce her to Raymond, but she didn't expect to run into him at the hotel.
All her efforts to gather information through friends had paid off.
"Mr. Montague, I'm a designer at the same studio as Penny. We recently competed for your order, but Penny worked harder than all of us. Even when she was sick, she insisted on meeting you with Mr. Clark. Fortunately, she got her wish. It's an honor that you chose our studio," Jane introduced herself.
It seemed like she was praising Selena, but she was actually insinuating that Selena used unscrupulous means to get close to Raymond.
Raymond knew Jane was trying to stir up trouble.
Ignoring her, he attempted to leave.
Seeing this, Jane hurriedly said, "I just met Mrs. Montague. She was very kind and asked me about Penny. She seemed to think Penny had ulterior motives. I was going to call Penny to warn her, but I didn't expect to run into you, Mr. Montague."
