Chapter 1568 Burning With Humiliation

Every time Emily saw Ann, she made sure to humiliate her.

"Ann, wasn't I clear enough last time? You and Paul don't belong in the same world. How pathetic can you be? What will it take for you to finally give up on him?"

Ann felt the humiliation wash over her. She hadn't come looking for Paul tonight—she genuinely hadn't known he would be here.

Emily stepped closer, grabbed her hair, and raised her hand to slap her without hesitation.

Ann tried to dodge, but two security guards appeared behind her, firmly gripping her shoulders.

One slap wasn't enough for Emily; she delivered two more in quick succession.

Ann's face swelled rapidly. This scene had played out so many times before that she'd almost grown numb to it.

"Get out of here now," Emily hissed. "Tonight is Elara and Paul's first date. If you dare interfere, I'll make you regret you were ever born."

As she spoke, her gaze drifted to something in the distance.

Ann had been ready to leave, but catching the gleam in Emily's eyes, she knew something malicious was brewing. Emily had found a new target.

Following her gaze, Ann froze.

There was her mother, Connie. Their relationship had deteriorated to the point of estrangement, with Ann pouring all her emotional energy into Paul just to find some respite.

But now, with Paul rejecting her and standing before Emily—a member of the Adams family—Ann felt stripped of every last shred of dignity.

Emily raised an eyebrow, watching Connie. "Isn't that your mother? What's she doing here—turning tricks at her age?"

As the words left her mouth, they watched Connie approach a young woman, grabbing her hair like a woman possessed.

Connie wore the uniform of the cleaning staff, but now she was entangled with the young woman, who let out a piercing scream. The scene descended into chaos.

The soft background music stopped abruptly. All eyes turned to Connie.

She wouldn't release the young woman's hair. "You whore!" she screamed. "Seducing my husband! How dare you! We had a perfect marriage until you came along! This is all your fault! You're nothing but a man-stealing slut! Why don't you just die?"

With the music silenced, Connie's voice carried throughout the room, reaching every ear.

Security personnel finally intervened, pulling Connie away.

The young woman, her hair disheveled, collapsed into a man's arms, sobbing pitifully, her shoulders trembling.

"You bitch!" Connie continued. "Playing the victim again! Swear to me—swear you'll never destroy my family again!"

"I don't even know your husband!" the young woman protested through tears.

"Liar! I saw you give him that box at the mall—lingerie inside. You shameless whore!"

"The mall was running a promotion," the woman explained. "I sell women's lingerie. Any customer who spends over five thousand dollars gets a free gift."

The implication was clear: if Connie's husband had spent that much at her boutique and the lingerie wasn't for Connie, then he must have given it to someone else.

Ann knew Connie all too well. Her mother monitored her men obsessively, treating even her own daughter as a potential rival.

It was her man who had inappropriate intentions towards Ann, but in Connie's eyes, Ann was the one seducing him.

Connie had called Ann every vile name imaginable, and now she was convinced another pretty young woman was after her man.

The young woman remained in the arms of her companion, who was clearly wealthy.

He instructed security to remove Connie and announced his intention to take the young woman to the hospital for a medical report to press charges.

Connie panicked. "You're in this together! Seducing my man and now trying to sue me? Is there no justice in this world?"

Her gaze swept the room and landed on Ann. "Ann! Come here! You're my daughter—come defend me!"

Just as she finished speaking, several figures emerged from around the corner: Paul, Elara, and Alex.

Connie continued spewing profanities—"Fuck you" and "bitch" among them—as she struggled against the security guards.

"That's my daughter over there! If you have something to say, say it to her!"

In her moment of need, she threw Ann under the bus without hesitation.

This wasn't the first time. Throughout Ann's life, Connie had never shared anything good with her, but whenever trouble arose, Ann was pushed to the front lines.

She was used to it by now, but with Paul and Elara watching, the humiliation burned hotter than the slap marks on her face.
