Chapter 91 Don't Talk to Me About Dignity

Catherine sneered, "It's not that she did anything wrong, but the Fair family just isn't on the same level as the Montagues. You know that. If she hadn't saved William's life, she wouldn't even have a shot with Raymond."

Beatrice, usually quick with a comeback, kept her mouth shut in front of Catherine.

She was just pissed that Selena couldn't win Raymond over, making both her and James look bad.

Catherine glanced at Selena, who still looked calm, which only made her angrier.

Catherine went on, "This contract says you have to divorce in a year. Even if Raymond can't keep his hands off you, you better be taking birth control. You're not fit to have Raymond's kids. I don't want my grandchild born into a greedy family."

Those words were brutal, and a flash of hatred crossed Selena's eyes.

Selena shot back, "Mrs. Montague, I didn't want to argue with you because you're Raymond's mom. I've been married to Raymond for three years and made sure not to bother you or get in his way. I've put up with your insults, but dragging my dad into this? That's too much."

Catherine didn't really know why she was acting this way, but seeing Max again this morning had stirred up some old, unpleasant memories.

So her face was sour, and she didn't bother hiding her disdain for Selena.

Her eldest son, Christopher Montague, had a dog just like Max.

But everyone knew Christopher had died six years ago.

She closed her eyes. Now, Raymond was her top priority. William tying Raymond to Selena was something she couldn't stand.

"Selena, if you think I'm being harsh, then let the Fair Group get through the second round of financing without the Montague Group's help. Since you've taken our charity, don't talk to me about dignity. I'm just stating the facts. What, you think I'm trying to humiliate you?" Catherine's tone was cold as she grabbed her bag.

"William's flight is at six tonight. Don't forget to pick him up. Raymond will be there too. Sign this contract and bring it to me." With that, Catherine left, full of herself.

Selena was left speechless.

The truth was, the Fair Group really did need the Montague Group to get through the second round of financing, so Catherine looking down on them was something Selena couldn't argue with.

James, standing off to the side, looked utterly humiliated. He took a few deep breaths, clutching his chest, his face going pale.

"Dad?" Selena was startled, but James just closed his eyes, trying to calm the pain.

His breathing got faster, and Beatrice didn't have time to blame Selena right now. If something were to happen to James, and with Nick still struggling to solidify his control over the Fair Group, everyone would still assume Selena, not Beatrice, was the rightful owner.

Plus, Beatrice only had ten percent of the shares, which wasn't nearly enough to have a real say.

They quickly called an ambulance and rushed James to the hospital.

On the way, James seemed like he wanted to say something but ended up just sighing deeply.

Selena felt a tightness in her chest and rubbed her temples.

At the hospital, James was taken into the emergency room right away. His health had been going downhill for years, and last time he almost fainted from anger because of Selena.

Catherine's words today had clearly hit a nerve.

Selena and Beatrice sat in the hallway, watching the emergency room light.

Beatrice snorted, "If you could make Raymond like you, Catherine wouldn't have to come and humiliate me and James. James wouldn't be in this state if it weren't for you."

The more Beatrice thought about it, the angrier she got, especially after Selena caught her buying a villa for Nick last time. James seemed to genuinely feel guilty towards Selena, so he had a lawyer draft a plan to give Selena twenty percent of his shares as compensation.

Beatrice had stopped him repeatedly until James agreed to wait a while before giving the shares to Selena.

That was twenty percent of the shares, twice as much as what she held.

Even though the Fair Group's current size meant those shares were enough for Beatrice to live comfortably, Beatrice had been competing with Barbara for years. How could she be satisfied without taking control of the company?

Selena shot back, "Beatrice, if you want Raymond's affection so much, why not push Alice forward?"

Beatrice huffed, "You! Do you think I don't want to? If it weren't for Alice's poor health, how could you have had this chance? Unfortunately, you're beautiful but completely useless!"

Selena closed her eyes, not bothering to argue or think about anything else.

Right now, she just prayed that James would be okay.
