Chapter 1622 Experiencing Such Despair for the First Time

A massive explosion erupted suddenly, causing Zaid's pupils to contract sharply. The deafening sound followed immediately.

Atlas stood at the doorway, thrown back by a powerful force, and the door slammed shut instantly.

The world inside the base began to spin wildly, as if the sky were falling.

Atlas felt the force slam him against the wall. He couldn't stand up, but he didn't feel much pain, as if something was cushioning him.

He turned around and saw Zaid acting as his human shield, blood already spilling from his mouth.

"Zaid!" He shouted, but his voice was drowned out by the roaring outside.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have gone after that insect. Zaid, wake up."

Meanwhile, the entire base was lifted by a tremendous force.

In the face of nature, human technology seemed insignificant. The base, which was claimed to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake, had all its doors blown open under the dual assault of a mudslide and earthquake.

The entire base was lifted from underground by the mudslide, then thrown high into the air, and finally swept forward.

Even the people in Arcturus City heard the deafening noise. Some began to kneel and pray, muttering under their breath.

Selena was about to eat something when she felt the table shake. She immediately put down her spoon, opened her room door, and stood in the hallway.

But everything outside seemed normal, except for the initial rumbling and the prayers of the townsfolk.

The woman living next to her also came out at this time. Her injuries had mostly healed, but her face looked serious. "It seems like there's an earthquake in the southwest. I came from that direction before, and the disease there is the worst. If there's an earthquake on top of that, the country's leaders might completely abandon that area and won't send anyone for rescue anytime soon."

Selena felt uneasy because that was the direction Raymond was headed.

"What magnitude is the earthquake?" Selena asked.

The woman checked the computer in her room, and her face turned grave. "Currently predicted to be an 8.1 magnitude earthquake."

An earthquake of this magnitude could shatter skyscrapers and even cause large cracks in the ground that would close up instantly.

Selena felt dizzy and immediately called Raymond's team. "Can we contact the local authorities? We need to see what's happening over there."

"Ms. Fair, the news reported the earthquake a minute ago, 8.1 magnitude. The authorities haven't ordered an evacuation for the people in that area. Instead, they lied, saying they've sent rescue teams, but in reality, they've fenced off the area with barbed wire. Anyone trying to escape will be shot."

"Why?"

"Because the disease outbreak is worst in that area. Now with the earthquake, terrified villagers will try to flee, but there's no cure for the disease. If they spread it, the whole country is doomed."

So the order from above was to abandon the villagers and shoot them to prevent the disease from spreading.

And to protect the country's reputation, they would tell international media that the villagers were buried alive by the earthquake, not that they were left to die.

Some countries lie to protect their international reputation, but this was the first time Selena felt such despair.

If she were one of those villagers, abandoned by her country, what would she do?

A country was a home, and even if they had hope for survival, it was useless.

That was the direction Raymond was headed. She had to go and see for herself.
