Chapter 1454 Even If It Is Used to Humiliate Him
"Well, well, look who it is. Emilio, huh? Did your family finally scrape together enough cash to fix up the place? Wait, if you had money, you should probably fix that leaky roof first. Your clothes always smell like mold, no one wants to sit next to you because of it."
The rich guy opened his car door, his gaze sweeping arrogantly over the truck.
"Tell me, Emilio, when are you gonna pay off all this stuff you owe? Even if you sold all the kids in there, you probably couldn't afford this truckload of goods."
He crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips.
His eyes finally landed on Selena, lighting up for a moment before turning into a sneer.
"Is this another girl who fell for your looks and decided to climb up the social ladder? You never learn, do you? Pretty girls at school are nice to you, and you shamelessly write them love letters. And what happens? They just play with you. What good are your grades then?"
The rich guy spat out his words, jealousy flashing in his eyes as he stared at Emilio's neck, as if trying to see through him.
For the past few years, Emilio had been the first student to break into the top ten on the island.
The school had been praising him for days, even rewarding his family with five hundred dollars.
The rich guy rolled his eyes and reached out to touch Selena.
"But this one is pretty good-looking. Where's she from?"
Selena's mouth twitched and she slapped his hand away.
The rich guy's face darkened instantly. "Damn it! You should be grateful I even looked at you! Do you know how many women would kill to be with me? I could give you a little money, and it would be enough to lift you out of poverty!"
Another voice, sweet and delicate, came from inside the car, "Lyle, are you falling for her?"
Lyle Warner threw a few hundred-dollar bills on the ground.
"Take a good look at this. Do you really want to stick with this poor loser Emilio? I'm telling you, if I leave now, you'll be begging me to come back by tomorrow."
Selena's brow furrowed at his words.
Emilio tried to step forward, but she held him back.
Seeing this, Lyle became even more arrogant.
"Coward, what do you think you're doing? Don't you know this rundown place you live in belongs to my family? With a snap of my fingers, your whole family would be out on the street! How dare you glare at me, you worthless piece of trash!"
He slapped Emilio across the face.
Emilio's head snapped to the side, blood at the corner of his mouth, but he said nothing.
Lyle, feeling satisfied, got back into his car. As he was about to close the window, he spat at them.
The car roared away, and Selena turned to look at Emilio's face.
A seventeen-year-old boy still has his pride, but now he was quietly wiping the blood from his mouth. It was clear this wasn't the first time he'd been bullied; Lyle's slap had been practiced.
Selena pulled out a tissue and handed it to him.
Emilio looked up, his eyes calm, and she felt a pang of sympathy.
In Emilio's life, his only belief was to study hard, get top grades, and one day move to the inner island to support his family.
But after all these years of hard work, he was suddenly faced with a harsh truth.
That jellyfish tattoo not only wouldn't help him bring his family a better life, but it might even cost him his own.
Anyone would be devastated, and it was clear he was also a target of bullying at school.
The more backward the place, the more arrogant the rich were. There were definitely more people like Lyle.
Selena noticed Emilio's eyes were red, and his hand, hanging by his side, was clenched into a tight fist, clearly struggling to hold something back.
After all, he was only seventeen.
She took a deep breath and pulled out another tissue to wipe the blood from his mouth.
"How much is Lyle's family worth?"
"Maybe five hundred million dollars."
That was a number Emilio couldn't even dream of, considering they earned two or three hundred dollars a month from their jobs.
Even with a college degree, they would only make about two thousand dollars a month, no more.
The outer island had only one high school and one college.
And the money Lyle casually threw on the ground, even if it was meant to humiliate him, was still two months' worth of his salary. He had no choice but to bend down and pick it up, bill by bill.
