Chapter 234 Son is Everything
Selena, always sharp, gave a small smile and nodded. "Alright, see you."
With that, she took off.
Raymond stood there for a moment, watching her leave, until Rosalind tugged at him.
"Raymond, what are you staring at?"
He didn't answer, just headed into the courtyard.
Selena grabbed a cab to Brian's place and saw a crowd already there, neighbors and all, pointing fingers at the Layman family.
The Layman’s door was shut tight, with Brian and Erin holed up inside, not daring to come out.
Outside, a few big guys with sticks and steel rods were hanging around, looking like the muscle Erin had mentioned.
Selena walked up to one of the guys holding a steel rod, a tall and ripped man whose muscles practically burst out of his shirt.
"Hey, can you tell me what Jacob did? Why are you blocking their house?"
The guy, surprised by her boldness, replied, "That coward beat up the boss's son. The kid needed over twenty stitches on his head. The boss wants an explanation, but they’re all hiding inside, too scared to face us. What a bunch of losers. No wonder their son’s a loser too."
Selena didn’t think Brian and Erin were cowards; they just cared too much about Jacob, to the point of having no boundaries.
But that’s how it was in Ridgefield. Sons were everything, like a retirement plan.
Even if the son messed up, he was still their golden boy.
People here had low standards for their sons, as long as they could get married. But they were way tougher on their daughters.
Selena smiled at the guy, staying calm.
"Hey everyone, no need to get mad. I'll get them out here to explain everything, okay? The boss just wants an explanation, not a fight, right?"
The guy snorted. "Fine, get them out first!"
Selena walked to the door and knocked. "Uncle, Aunt."
Brian and Erin were sitting inside, looking desperate. Hearing her voice was like a lifeline.
"Selena!"
Erin rushed to the door but hesitated when she saw the tough guys outside.
"Open the door. If there’s a misunderstanding, let’s clear it up."
Erin glanced at Jacob, who was sulking in the corner, sighed, and, trusting Selena, opened the door.
"Selena, thank goodness you're here."
Seeing Jacob in the corner, Selena got mad. "Jacob, if you’re a man, come out now. Quit hiding behind your parents. If you had the guts to do it, own up to it."
Jacob stiffened, then snapped.
"Yeah, I hit them with a brick, so what? Those jerks deserved it. I think I went too easy on them!"
Hearing this, the guys outside swung their steel rods and moved closer.
"Looks like you need a lesson."
Seeing them approach, Jacob’s bravado vanished, and he hid behind Selena, clutching her like a shield.
Selena laughed angrily. "Weren’t you just acting tough? You hit someone so hard they needed over twenty stitches. That’s attempted murder, isn’t it? If they press charges, you’re going to jail."
Brian and Erin got frantic.
"Jacob didn’t mean it. See if there’s any way to negotiate. We’re willing to pay, whatever it takes."
It was this kind of coddling that got Jacob into this mess in the first place.
