Chapter 111 It's Raymond, He Lent It To Me
Selena felt a bit queasy.
She headed downstairs and saw Beatrice on the couch, looking a bit annoyed.
Beatrice had kept herself in good shape. She must've had some charm to catch James's eye back then. Otherwise, she wouldn't have snagged James, whose career was already solid, even with Nick in the picture.
Selena frowned for no clear reason.
She wanted to ask Beatrice why she didn't go to the hospital today, but knowing James always pampered Beatrice, even if she wanted to chill at home, he wouldn't mind.
So, Selena didn't ask and just opened the door.
A guy was standing outside. Her eyes widened, and her stomach did a flip. It was Nick.
Nick was in a suit, probably just back from work. His eyes landed on Selena's curvy figure, deep and intense. But he kept it in check and just smiled. "Selena, back tonight?"
Selena always hated the way Nick looked at her. She just nodded and tried to walk past him.
Nick caught a whiff of her perfume, fighting the urge it sparked.
"I didn't see your car. Need a ride?" he asked.
"No thanks," Selena replied.
"Selena, I'm still your brother, you know, " Nick said gently.
Selena had already walked a few steps away, not wanting to argue.
Nick stood there, watching her leave.
When he turned and walked into the living room, the smell hit him, and a look of disgust crossed his face.
"Be more careful next time. You'll get caught eventually!" Nick snapped at Beatrice.
Beatrice's face soured at Nick's tone.
"How was I supposed to know she'd come over tonight?" Beatrice shot back.
Nick took off his suit jacket and slung it over his arm. "If you're gonna mess around behind James's back, don't do it here. James isn't in great health. If you really piss him off, the Fair Family still has shares that belong to Selena. You haven't locked those down yet, so what's the rush?"
"Alright, my bad. I had him leave through the back door. Luckily, the guard gave me a heads-up." Beatrice replied.
"Good. Make sure it doesn't happen again," Nick said, then added as he was about to leave, "Get someone to air out the living room."
Feeling humiliated by Nick's scolding, Beatrice quickly called a maid to clean up and disinfect the study.
Selena, holding the document, walked for another half hour back to the hospital. She couldn't possibly ask Beatrice for cab fare; she'd just get mocked.
As Selena was getting close to the hospital, she accidentally bumped into a nurse rushing to get off work, causing her to stumble backward.
Luckily, she used her umbrella to steady herself, but it got a long tear from a tree branch.
The nurse quickly apologized and hurried off with her head down.
It was just an umbrella, so Selena didn't bother asking for compensation.
"Why do you look so disheveled?" James asked as she walked into the ward. He was the only one there, having just finished reading some documents.
Selena sniffled and said, "Two tires blew out halfway here. I left my phone and bag in the car. Dad, can you spot me some money for a cab?"
This was the first time since Selena became an adult that she had asked James for money.
James felt a weird sense of accomplishment and handed her a card.
His eyes caught sight of the Rolls-Royce umbrella in Selena's hand, and he frowned, asking, "Who gave you this umbrella?"
"A colleague."
"Your colleague drives a Rolls-Royce?"
Selena found it odd that an umbrella could reveal that someone drove a Rolls-Royce until she looked down and saw the obvious logo on the handle.
Thinking about the tear in the umbrella, Selena felt a headache coming on.
But considering the Hermes dog leash from last time, a Rolls-Royce umbrella didn't seem that surprising. It would just be a bit painful to compensate for it.
"Selena, you and your colleague..." James started.
Afraid that James would nag, Selena answered honestly, "It was Raymond. I ran into him on the way, and he lent it to me."
A look of joy appeared on James's face, and he willingly handed her the card.
Selena used the card to get some change at a nearby supermarket, but she didn't return to Ashbourne Manor because Raymond's route was heading there. If she went back now, she might run into him.
The traffic police handled her car, and within two hours, they contacted her at the hotel she was staying at and brought it over.
Selena looked up the price of the umbrella online and saw that it was $20,000, making her heart ache.
Raymond had just finished his shower. Selena hadn't returned yet, but he didn't mind. To him, she was just a stranger.
He picked up his phone and saw a $20,000 transfer, raising an eyebrow and sending a question mark.
Selena: [Mr. Montague, sorry, I damaged the umbrella.]
Feeling a bit unlucky tonight, she also sent a pitiful emoji.
Raymond rarely chatted with people, except for occasional conversations with friends in his circle and business calls.
So seeing the usually aloof Selena send such an emoji intrigued him.
Along with the intrigue, a subtle feeling arose in his heart.
