Chapter 1395 Investigation
Paul took a sip of water, standing before the mirror to adjust his clothes.
"Before my accident, Raymond had asked me to investigate Tessa's situation."
Alex nodded. He'd heard about this.
"Tell me everything that's happened recently," Paul said. "Especially regarding Raymond and Selena. Leave nothing out."
He deliberately avoided mentioning Ann, as if even her name made him uncomfortable.
Alex quickly briefed him on the events in Vistalia.
Paul spent ten minutes processing the information.
"I did meet with Victor before my accident," he finally said. "If you hadn't told me about his other identity, I wouldn't have suspected him even after waking up. His cover was impeccable."
Paul was naturally cautious. Their circle shared genuine bonds—none would suspect another without solid evidence. For Raymond to have suspected Victor, he must have been absolutely certain.
Now knowing Victor's true identity, Paul could piece things together.
"After meeting Victor, I was heading to Ridgefield. My team's data analysis suggested Tessa was likely born at Ridgefield Hospital. The medical profession is typically stable, yet that hospital dismissed many staff in a suspiciously short period. I wanted to investigate personally, but then the accident happened."
"Paul, Raymond's people are saying that Layla is actually Tessa," Alex interjected.
Paul lowered his head in thought. Layla's background did fit the profile, but something still felt off.
"I need to go to Ridgefield again, with more resources this time. I have a theory, but I'm concerned it might be wrong and could lead Raymond to make a series of mistakes. I need to see for myself."
Without the Layla situation, he would immediately suspect Selena. Among all the women he knew, only she matched that particular background.
But Layla's history was remarkably similar to Selena's. Plus, there was DNA evidence supporting Layla's identity.
However, if Victor's identity was compromised, then the DNA test he provided was likely falsified too.
Having reached this conclusion, Paul was about to call Raymond when his assistant interrupted, "Mr. Adams, Mr. Smith is here. He says he has some questions for you."
Though Paul wasn't close with Lawrence, he went to meet him in the main hall.
Lawrence looked haggard, though his commanding presence remained intact.
"Mr. Smith, I trust you're well?" Paul greeted him. Lawrence showing up so soon after Paul's recovery suggested he'd uncovered something significant.
Lawrence rubbed his brow, his face ashen. "My father assigned Victor to find Layla, and Raymond gave you the same task. I want to know your plans because I'm coming with you."
Paul studied him carefully.
Lawrence looked exhausted, his eyes bloodshot as if he hadn't slept in days. He should have been in Vistalia, yet here he was in Silver Bay City.
"Paul, I need to know if Layla is truly my sister. I'll spare no resource to find out."
His voice was hoarse, his hands trembling as he spoke.
Paul had already heard from Alex that Layla had died in Vistalia, and that Lawrence was somehow involved. Lawrence had always protected Tessa as his sister, but if the woman he'd accidentally killed was his blood relative, how could he live with himself?
Despite his recent surgery, Paul couldn't delay. Raymond's situation was growing increasingly complex, and as his friend, Paul needed answers quickly.
"I'm going to Ridgefield—where Layla lived."
Lawrence stood immediately. "I'm coming with you."
Alex sighed, concerned about Paul's health.
"Count me in too," he said.
