Chapter 1389 The Words That Pulled Her In

Paul's gaze shifted to Alex. "Who are you?"

Alex, already briefed about Paul's memory issues, cut straight to the point.

"You need to come back with me. While you've been gone, the Adams family has been circling like vultures, eager to divide your assets. Let's get you to a hospital first for a proper examination."

This remote location lacked proper medical facilities, after all.

Paul instinctively looked toward Ann, who offered a bittersweet smile.

"He's one of your close friends. If he's found you, it must be safe for you to return now. Let's go back together."

Only when she mentioned coming along did Paul's expression soften.

The three of them got into the car with Alex driving. He'd been detained for several days himself, suspected of colluding with Raymond. The authorities had only recently cleared his name and eased surveillance on him.

When he'd heard Paul was alive, he'd nearly wept with joy.

At the hospital, Alex rushed Paul through a series of examinations. He hadn't kept Paul's survival secret from the Adams family, so before the tests were even complete, about fifteen family members had stormed into the hospital and were now crowding the hallway.

Ann, who had been at Paul's side, suddenly found herself pushed to the margins as the family closed ranks around him.

The doctor emerged with his assessment. "Nothing serious. He should make a full recovery today."

Paul's natural healing ability was remarkable; most of his wounds had already scabbed over.

The Adams family members exchanged awkward glances. Paul's return had completely upended their plans to divide his shares.

Emily was the first to break into tears.

She called out, "What are we waiting for? Doctor, prepare him for surgery immediately!"

The doctor nodded, scheduling the procedure within thirty minutes.

In her haste, Emily hadn't noticed Ann in the corner. But Ann had seen her, and remembering the humiliation from that night, lowered her head.

The hallway was now filled with Adams family members. If she stayed, she'd surely become the target of their gossip.

She glanced at Paul, noting how his demeanor had transformed—cold and aristocratic among his people, as if drawing a clear line between their worlds.

They belonged to different universes.

Yet Ann harbored a small hope, clinging to the beautiful moments they'd shared. Paul had gently read poetry to her, watched movies together, gardened side by side, and even adopted a little gray dog together.

After Ann had suggested numerous names, Paul had finally decided on "Tan."

Paul had said, "Ann, you have trouble sleeping at night—when Tan grows up, he can keep you company by your bed."

Those words had made her fall even harder.

Ann had always been someone who loved too easily. But now, huddled in the corner like a guilty thief, Ann could only hope that Paul would remember her after his surgery.

She should have left, but stubbornly remained in the farthest corner of the hallway, avoiding any interaction with the Adams family.

As Paul listened to the doctor's instructions, he glanced up and spotted Ann in the corner. She looked so isolated and forlorn, as if deliberately segregated from the group.

"Ann," he called out, beckoning to her. "Come here."
