Chapter 1491 No One Here to Serve You
Selena didn't touch the bowl of porridge.
The servant rolled her eyes and took the bowl away.
"Just stay in bed. No one's here to wait on you."
Once the door closed, Selena slowly got out of bed.
Thankfully, her body hadn't been injected with any other drugs, so she still had some strength.
She looked out the window and saw a luxurious courtyard with artificial hills and flowing water.
She tried to open the window but found it was locked.
She then went to the door and pushed it.
The door was locked from the outside and wouldn't budge.
Was she being held captive?
At least the room was spacious and had its own bathroom.
She returned to the bed, unsure of the current situation, and decided to wait.
Meanwhile, in the Schmidt family's grand hall, Mario sat with a cup of tea in front of him.
The current head of the Schmidt family, Parker, was in his forties. The previous head had passed away a few years ago, leaving Parker in charge.
Parker looked at Mario, noting his demeanor, and chuckled.
"So, Mr. Torres, you want to do more business with us?"
Mario set his teacup down, his tone indifferent, "What kind of business, Mr. Schmidt? Isn't human trafficking your specialty?"
In Mystic Prison, everyone knew what these powerful families were up to. It was a dirty but enduring trade, monopolized by these families. They could sell any ordinary person on the island.
Women had very low status here, valued only for bearing children. Each additional child brought a significant reward, so there were hardly any only children on the island.
Every school on the island aimed to nurture children's talents. If a child showed promise in any field, they were quickly noticed.
It wasn't as exaggerated as Emilio had told Selena, but it was close enough.
Only the heads of the inner island families knew the full extent of these rules. Even other family members were kept in the dark.
Family members were vaguely aware of their family's supreme status on the island, so they were always arrogant when they went out.
Parker squinted slightly, sizing up Mario.
A few days ago, a man named Raymond had appeared here. The families had united to capture him, making him a prisoner.
Although Raymond had escaped, now another man, Mario, had shown up. They looked somewhat alike.
But Raymond, for all his ruthlessness, was still principled—he would never stoop to human trafficking.
This man in front of him was completely different from Raymond.
Most likely, they weren't related.
Parker remained silent, just staring at his cup.
After a long while, he asked, "How many do you want, Mr. Torres?"
"Mr. Schmidt, I want the best quality, twenty of them."
"No problem. But when will we get the medicine you promised?"
"In a month."
"Alright, one month. During this month, the Schmidt family will take good care of you, Mr. Torres."
Mario stood up and left the hall.
The butler beside Parker spoke up, "Mr. Schmidt, can we really trust this guy? For years, it was always someone else who came to us. But now, out of nowhere, there's this Mario—and he's awfully generous."
Parker set his teacup down and sneered.
"Whether he's reliable or not, the medicine he's talking about is very tempting. It's just a month. If he doesn't deliver, he won't leave here alive."
The butler fell silent, standing respectfully.
The four major families had always been in competition.
They controlled everything on the inner island but knew that above them was a mysterious figure, Emilio.
Every three months, Emilio's people would come to demand more people. Where these people went, no one knew, but they never returned.
Besides Emilio, there was a hooded figure responsible for selling medicines.
The hooded figure knew Emilio but rarely appeared together.
The four families had to buy medicines from this hooded figure. The supply was limited, and each family got very little.
Now, with a new person selling medicines, the Schmidt family had to give it a try, regardless of whether it was true or not.
Mario had promised that if the medicine was good, he would sell it exclusively to the Schmidt family.
This meant the Schmidt family could monopolize the medicine.
Parker's lips curled into a smile, curious about what Mario would deliver.
He instructed the butler, "Whatever he needs, make sure he gets it."
"Yes, Mr. Schmidt."
Mario indeed requested a laboratory from the Schmidt family, indicating he planned to develop the medicine himself.
When the butler reported this to Parker, he frowned but agreed.
In less than half a day, a clean laboratory was set up next to Selena's room.
To keep an eye on Selena, Mario had a hole made in the adjoining wall.
