Chapter 82 A Bit of Warmth for Her
Brian was dealing with heatstroke, and Selena didn't want to argue, so she just nodded. "Uncle Brian, I get it."
Brian smiled but felt bad for Selena. "Erin made some sausages this time. Take a few more with you. She also made some jam. I remember you loved her jam back in school."
"Okay." With that, Selena stopped talking and drove Brian to the hospital.
On the way, Erin called, wondering why they hadn't come back yet.
Selena answered, "Uncle Brian's got heatstroke. I'm taking him to the hospital. We might be a bit late."
Erin got worried and asked, "Which hospital? I'll come over right away."
After Selena told her the hospital name and hung up, another call came in. "Ms. Fair, the apartment you listed has been sold, but we need you to come in person to sign the contract. When can you come?"
The apartment was sold.
Selena calmed herself, thinking that once the sale went through, she'd have enough for the down payment on that house.
She replied, "Okay, I'm still in Ridgefield. I can sign it when I get back."
The person on the phone said, "Alright, Ms. Fair. I heard you urgently need the money. Since it has to go through the bank, it might take about half a month. The sooner you sign, the sooner the money will be in your hands."
"Got it, thanks." With that, Selena hung up.
Having sorted out one problem, Selena felt a bit relieved. At least when William came back, he wouldn't have to deal with Raymond at Ashbourne Manor.
She was about to head back to the ward when she saw Brian coming out.
Brian said, "Selena, I'm fine now. I don't need to stay in the hospital. Staying here would just waste money. Take me home; I can rest there for a few days."
Selena said, "Uncle Brian, I'll cover your hospital stay. Don't worry about the money."
But in the end, she couldn't convince Brian. After getting the medication, she had to take him home.
Erin made dinner and wanted Selena to stay.
Selena saw Megan coming in from outside and shook her head. "No, Aunt Erin, I haven't finished the painting for Harmony Garden."
Hearing it was about Harmony Garden, Erin didn't push Selena to stay.
As she passed by Megan, she heard her snort, "That's just an excuse. I bet you're staying there to seduce that man. I heard your husband is quite wealthy too. Do you know the consequences if you cheat on him?"
Megan actually wanted to seduce Raymond herself. Raymond was distinguished and handsome. If he liked her, she could do whatever she wanted in Ridgefield.
But Megan had tried multiple times and still couldn't even get into Harmony Garden.
Plus, she heard Raymond was leaving the day after tomorrow.
Selena knew what Megan was up to and reminded her, "If you want to talk to him, at least get a bachelor's degree. You didn't even finish middle school. Even if you talked to him, you wouldn't understand a word he's saying."
Megan was about to blow up, but Selena had already walked out before she could say anything.
Selena got into her car, feeling a headache coming on. Megan was both foolish and uneducated, always aiming high but achieving nothing, dreaming of high-paying jobs but never earning a dime.
Brian and Erin had been supporting her all along. After Jacob ran away, Megan became even more reckless.
But this was the Layman family's business, and Selena couldn't interfere.
Driving back to Harmony Garden, Selena realized she hadn't eaten anything since noon and was now starving.
Harmony Garden should have a cafeteria, but she didn't know where it was, and Ridgefield didn't have food delivery services.
Selena's stomach was growling. Just as she was thinking about going out to buy something, she saw Raymond walking out from the archway.
Raymond saw her and instinctively frowned.
Selena smiled at him, "Mr. Montague, do you know where the cafeteria is?"
Her stomach was really bothering her, and she looked a bit pale.
"Haven't eaten?" Raymond's tone was indifferent. Selena nodded, her voice tinged with a bit of grievance, "I forgot."
Raymond thought Selena had gone to mourn, probably for a relative.
Raymond said, "The cafeteria is closed. John will bring some food later."
The implication was that they could eat together.
Selena placed her hand on her stomach and felt inexplicably aggrieved upon hearing this.
Mourning Barbara had already left Selena feeling heavy, and Brian's words only deepened her gloom, bringing James to mind and dragging her spirits down.
She didn't expect that the person who would give her a bit of warmth at this moment would be Raymond, even though it might be just a small gesture for him.
"Thank you." This sentence was incredibly sincere.
Raymond was taken aback, his gaze falling on her face.
Because of the pain, Selena's face was pale, her teeth lightly biting her lip, looking fragile and pitiful.
He had seen her strong and cold when arguing with others, confident and logical in school, and charming when emotional.
But this was the first time he had seen her looking so vulnerable.
