Chapter 228 Eliciting Sympathy
Selena had just finished talking when she heard the rain start to pour outside.
Harrison walked out of the kitchen, saw the rain, and grinned. "After this rain, we'll see a bunch of fresh mushrooms popping up tonight."
Harrison was a big fan of the forest. He plopped down on the sofa and started chatting about all the cool stuff you could find in the mountains, instantly lightening the mood.
But as they talked, the rain turned into a full-blown downpour, reducing visibility and making the sky gloomy.
In a forest like this, a rainstorm could be pretty scary.
Harrison spoke up, "I'll have the servants set up a few rooms for you. Driving in this weather is dangerous, and who knows if there are any landslides. So, stay here."
He looked directly at Selena. "Since you're with Raymond, you should stay too. I wouldn't feel right with you driving back."
Selena couldn't really refuse. If she insisted on leaving but Raymond stayed, she'd be the one driving through the storm alone.
So, she looked at Raymond.
Raymond rubbed his temples, looking a bit helpless. "Alright, we'll take you up on that."
"Don't worry about it. You've stayed here before."
Rosalind, who had been quiet, suddenly perked up and joined in, "Yeah, Raymond was so young back then, staying here with Mr. William Montague. Ridgefield didn't even have a main road at that time. He was here for a mountain vacation and met us."
Selena realized that before William got sick, he shared Harrison's love for the forest. Every year, when the wild mushrooms were in season, he'd come with a young Raymond, which is how they got to know Harrison and stayed in touch.
They chatted through dinner, and then Selena followed a servant to her room for the night.
Her room and Raymond's were in the same courtyard, just twenty feet apart.
Staying at someone else's house had its inconveniences, the biggest being no change of clothes. She had only planned to visit for an hour or two and then head back to the hotel, so she didn't bring any extra clothes.
The room had a private bathroom and toiletries, which was a relief. At least she could take a good shower.
Last night at the hotel, she had to sleep in a chair because of a black bug, and she was exhausted.
Everything here was clean, with a woody scent, and all the furniture was high-quality wood.
Selena felt relaxed. She took off her clothes, scrubbed them with the provided soap, and tossed them in the laundry basket, planning to wash them after her bath and dry them with a hairdryer.
After soaking for about twenty minutes, she got up and was drying off with a towel when she heard a knock on the door.
Thinking it was a servant, she wrapped herself in a light blue bath towel, quickly dried her hair, and went to open the door.
But it was Raymond.
Raymond's hand was still in the air. Seeing her slightly damp hair and flushed face, his eyelashes fluttered.
Selena was stunned too, looking up at him. It took her a few seconds to react and try to stay calm.
"Do you need something?"
Her skin was very fair, flushed pink from the heat, and her eyes looked straight at him.
In this state, she evoked a sense of tenderness and affection.
