Chapter 132 Unnecessary Action

James couldn't stand Jacob. The guy had run off with a ton of cash from clients, almost tanking a huge deal for the Fair Family.

Back then, James was drowning in work, trying to fix the chaos Jacob left behind.

James had tried to help out Brian, his late ex-wife Barbara's brother, but got nothing but grief in return. And Jacob? Total jerk.

It was bad enough Selena still talked to Brian, but now she was getting mixed up with Jacob too. James felt a wave of disappointment.

Selena had nothing to say, and she wasn't great at lying to James anyway.

Since James knew about it, borrowing money was probably off the table now.

Even though he was her dad, Selena found it tough to ask for cash.

Thinking about James's liver cancer made her feel helpless.

"Dad, I didn't skip the banquet because of Jacob. Raymond got hurt, so I took him to the hospital. He didn't go that night either," Selena explained.

James squinted. He hadn't heard that Raymond missed the event.

Selena wouldn't lie about something so easy to check.

James sighed, feeling a bit better. "As long as it wasn't because of Jacob. I thought you couldn't see the situation clearly. You should stay away from Brian's family. That Megan is trouble. Brian and Erin treat her like gold, but it's gonna backfire."

Selena agreed with that.

But right now, the eight million dollars was the big issue.

James seemed in a good mood, so maybe she could suggest buying a gift for Raymond as a way to bring it up.

But before she could say anything, James's phone rang.

He looked at the number with a hint of disgust but answered it anyway. "What is it?"

Erin's timid voice came through, taking forever to get to the point. "James, I know you're still mad about what happened, but I'm desperate. Megan wrecked an expensive car, and they want eight million dollars. Selena said not to worry and that she'd handle it, but I'm really uneasy. James, I know you have money. Could you lend it to me? I'll sell the house and some land to pay you back."

James was so mad he started coughing violently. "Eight million dollars? Selena told you not to worry? Did she say she'd pay it? Where would she get that kind of money? Erin, let me tell you, this is Megan's mess. Don't expect me to help. Jacob and Megan are useless, just dragging you down!"

"James..." Erin's voice was hoarse, but James hung up before she could finish.

James looked at Selena with a cold smile.

Selena frowned, probably guessing who had called.

She felt a wave of irritation. She had already told Erin that Megan would be out in a few days and that she'd handle the rest.

But Erin and Brian had spoiled Megan for years and couldn't stand to see her locked up even for a day.

So they called James, which messed up Selena's plans and let James know she was helping the Layman Family.

"Dad..." Selena started.

"Erin called me. Doesn't she remember the trouble Jacob caused me? How dare she ask for help! Selena, if you help the Layman Family with this eight million dollars, forget about the shares. I'd rather you spend the money on Alice's medical bills than on the Layman Family," James said.

"Hand over the allowance card I gave you last time," he added.

Selena's eyes showed disbelief, but she handed it over in silence.

"How much did you spend?"

"Two hundred thousand dollars."

"What did you buy?"

"Cufflinks for Raymond."

Hearing this, James's frown relaxed, and he handed the card back.

Selena didn't take it, feeling humiliated, so she lowered her gaze. "No, thank you."
