Chapter 1417 Isn't Selena Hurting Too?
Lawrence's mind went blank. He said nothing.
Richard's chest heaved as he trembled with anger. After a long pause, he finally spoke, "If Tessa is suffering, what about Selena? She nearly died tonight, Lawrence. How long will you remain so blind?"
Lawrence crouched where he stood, unable to comprehend why Richard had suddenly turned against him. Throughout their lives, they had never fought like this.
Tonight, Richard hadn't just argued—he'd physically attacked him.
Why should he care about Selena's pain? As far as Lawrence was concerned, Selena deserved to die. If Richard and Raymond hadn't arrived in time, her body would be floating at the bottom of the river by now.
Richard's throat ached. He forced a bitter smile. "Lawrence, go see Dad tonight. There's something I need to tell both of you."
After hanging up, Lawrence frowned, wondering what Richard wanted to say.
As he turned to leave, Tessa, who had appeared to be asleep, suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
She sobbed, "Lawrence, are you leaving? Are you abandoning me too? Please don't go—I'll die without you. My heart hurts so much right now."
Lawrence patted her back reassuringly. "I'm just checking on Father, to see when he might wake up."
Hearing this, Tessa relaxed. She'd feared he was going to see Selena.
Smiling to herself, she thought, 'Jason will never wake up again.'
"Alright, Lawrence, but come back soon."
Lawrence nodded, but as he turned away, his eyes darkened.
During the drive to Smith Villa, his expression remained grim. He contemplated what to say to Richard when they met. Not only had Richard attacked him, but he'd also struck Tessa. Had Raymond's influence corrupted him?
Lawrence's frown deepened. An hour later, he pulled up outside Smith Villa.
Jason remained unconscious. Doctors had examined him repeatedly, attributing his condition to extreme emotional distress. Yet he showed no signs of waking.
Lawrence sat by the bedside for an hour, but Richard never showed.
Richard had intended to return to the Smith Villa immediately, but he was deeply concerned about Selena's condition—pregnant and unwell.
As her brother, he should have aligned himself with Raymond, but Selena's pregnancy made him question Raymond's character. Would a good man get his ex-wife pregnant without even giving her a proper wedding?
The thought alone made Richard want to punch Raymond again.
He had only just discovered Selena's identity, and now she was carrying Raymond's child.
Richard felt his head might explode. When they'd rescued Selena from the water, he'd even contemplated how to separate her from Raymond. With Raymond wanted by Stellaria, their relationship could only lead to disaster.
He didn't want Selena jumping from one fire into another.
But now she was pregnant.
Richard could only stew in his anger.
Though he should have returned to Smith Villa immediately, he inexplicably found himself in Raymond's car instead.
His gaze remained fixed on Selena, making her uncomfortable enough to wonder if something was wrong with him.
She looked to Raymond for help, but he remained silent, still wounded by her apparent reluctance to keep their child.
On the way back to the underground fighting arena, Richard kept asking if she needed water.
"Would you like some fruit? I can cut it for you."
"Selena, you need to take better care of yourself. And that underground fighting arena is no place to stay—it's filthy. You should move to downtown Vistalia. The Smith family has a separate villa in the city center—beautiful surroundings, perfect for your pregnancy."
Exhausted from the day's events, Selena was drowsy.
She shook her head slowly. "No thank you, Mr. Smith."
The light in Richard's eyes instantly dimmed.
He didn't even notice his phone continuously flashing with notifications.
