Chapter 92 Another Missed Appointment

James's resuscitation was a real struggle this time. It wasn't until 5:30 in the afternoon that the doctor finally wheeled him out.

Selena looked at James, now with an oxygen mask on, and felt a pang of sadness. "Is my dad in really bad shape?" she asked.

James had been grinding away at the company for years, never bothering with check-ups. Any pain, he'd just pop some painkillers and keep going.

Selena remembered even when Barbara was alive, James was the same. Barbara would always paint a picture of their future: a cozy house in Ridgefield, blooming flowerbeds, and simple contentment.

But when Barbara married James, they were dirt poor and faced a lot of discrimination. James felt guilty about it, so he rejected the idea, always thinking he needed to make a ton of money to give Barbara a better life.

In her younger years, Selena also resented James for not getting what Barbara really wanted.

By the time the Fair Group started making money, Barbara was already gone.

After busting her butt for half his life, she never got to enjoy the wealth, but Beatrice ended up benefiting.

The doctor took off his mask and glanced at Selena. "What's your relationship with Mr. Fair?"

"I'm his daughter," Selena replied.

The doctor signaled for others to push James into the ward and then pointed to his office. "The situation is a bit complicated. Please come to my office."

Selena nodded. As soon as the door closed, the doctor sighed, "Ms. Fair, Mr. Fair has liver cancer, and it's in the late stage. At this point, we don't recommend surgery. He has about a year left to live. I hope you can prepare yourselves mentally."

Selena's mind went blank. She must have misheard.

How could this be?

"Are you sure?" Selena asked in disbelief.

"The tests confirm it. The cancer cells have already spread. He must have been in constant pain for the past two years but didn't take it seriously. Now, he can only take painkillers and arrange for hospitalization as soon as possible. He must also get plenty of rest. His liver enzymes are high, likely from staying up late. At his age, health is the most important thing. Everything else is futile. Ms. Fair, you must persuade Mr. Fair to rest well and get enough sleep," the doctor explained.

Selena stood there, speechless.

The doctor knew how hard it was for family members to digest such painful news and sighed without saying more.

Selena didn't even know how she left the office.

At the airport, Raymond and his group were already there. He glanced around, noticing that Selena hadn't replied to his messages.

Frowning, he sent another one: [Where are you?]

No response. Raymond's face darkened as he walked into the terminal.

John, standing behind him, noticed his expression and asked quietly, "Ms. Fair didn't come? Should we call her?"

A cold look flashed in Raymond's eyes. "No need."

They waited for William to come out.

William wasn't in the best health and was a bit tired from the flight, but the thought of seeing Selena brought a smile to his face.

However, when he came out, he didn't see Selena. Instead, Raymond was waiting there.

"Where's Selena?" William asked, somewhat furious.

Raymond's face grew even colder. "Grandpa, let me take you back to The Montague Villa first. Dinner is already prepared."

"Raymond, did you have a quarrel with Selena? You're a man; you need to be more accommodating. Selena is excellent, but sometimes she's too strong-willed," William said.

Raymond's mood remained heavy. His impression of Selena had long been beyond repair. Was it because he had agreed to resolve the second round of financing that she didn't even bother to do the bare minimum to please William?

"Raymond, I'm talking to you," William huffed.

Raymond didn't dare to anger William. The doctor had repeatedly warned that William couldn't handle any stress, not even a little.

"Grandpa, I understand. She must have been delayed by work today. I'll call her later to check," Raymond explained.

William nodded in satisfaction, smiling. "That's more like it! I'll call Selena later, too. She must be busy; otherwise, she wouldn't have missed picking me up. I specifically called Ashbourne Manor to notify her. I wonder what trouble she's encountered."

William thought Selena must have had a reason for not coming.

But to Raymond, it seemed deliberate.

Selena missed the last appointment, and now this one, too. Was this the Fair family's way of upbringing?
