Chapter 1441 They Are Not That Ruthless
Selena rubbed her temples, feeling a mix of disbelief and frustration.
"I'm not kidding. This morning, Mrs. Smith called me into the study to talk. But after only a few words, her teacup almost slipped from her hand. I reached out to steady it and ended up touching her hand. It felt like she was wearing a glove that imitated human skin, but her face looked real.
"It must have taken a lot of effort to make her face look so convincing—maybe so much that they didn't have enough resources to do the same for the rest of her body. So for the hands, they just used gloves that looked like aged skin.
"Raymond, do you see what I mean? I think these two people might actually be around fifty years old.
"There's a big difference between the skin of a fifty-year-old and someone in their seventies or eighties."
As Selena spoke, her heart raced. It had taken a lot of willpower to keep her composure in the study.
"They must have undergone professional training to replace Mrs. Tatum Smith and Mr. Nolan Smith. What confirmed my suspicion was their attitude towards me."
She paused for a moment before asking Richard, "Richard, did you already know that the current Cora isn't our mom?"
Richard's eyes widened, and he tugged at his lips, as if giving up the struggle completely.
"No, I didn't know."
Selena thought, Raymond must not have told him yet.
She recounted the story of Octavia and Cora, then continued with her own discoveries.
"Richard, can you tell me your impression of our grandparents?"
"They were very strict. Everyone in the Smith family had to listen to them, and anyone who made a mistake would be punished, no exceptions."
"Do you think such shrewd and strict grandparents wouldn't know that Octavia married into the Smith family? When I talked to Grandma this morning, I had a feeling they knew but chose to ignore it. They broke their own rules. But when it came to me, they wanted me to change my blood and get rid of my child."
"Richard, the person in the Smith family who got involved with drugs met a tragic end, and he deserved it. Dad expelled Lawrence from the Smith family before he fell into a coma, and Lawrence deserved that too. But Dad loved Octavia, and that wasn't his fault. So I guess our grandparents did believe in God and were indeed calm and decisive. But when they saw they couldn't stop Dad, they chose to turn a blind eye. They weren't that heartless. So the two people who were heartless to me are impostors, and our grandparents are missing."
Selena raised her hand, looking at her fingertips, her expression calm.
"I remember too clearly the feeling of touching something that wasn't human skin."
Raymond, standing behind her, slowly moved his fingers and pressed her shoulder. "You're really smart."
By saying this, he showed he believed Selena.
Selena was a bit surprised. After all, this was a shocking revelation. For such a prominent family like the Smiths, having two high-ranking members replaced was a big deal.
"You believe me?"
Raymond rested his chin on her shoulder, a slight smile on his lips.
"I've long suspected that our grandparents knew about the marriage to Octavia all along. If they could be lenient with Jason, how could they be so heartless as to make you get rid of your child? You can still find information about our grandparents online; they were influential figures and didn't tolerate their children making big mistakes. This actually shows they had principles. So I believe you. Relax, it's okay, don't worry."
Selena finally breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Richard sitting across from her.
Richard's face was a mix of various emotions, looking extremely troubled.
After a long while, he finally said, "We need to inform Lawrence about this. Our grandparents held significant authority in the Smith family; he should be able to help."
Despite everything, Lawrence had been the heir of the Smith family for many years, and everyone respected him. He had some skills.
If it weren't for Tessa, his life would have continued smoothly, and he would have remained favored by fate.
Richard immediately called him. After a few seconds of contemplation, Lawrence said, "I'll find someone to help. You and... Selena stay with Raymond for now."
