Chapter 81 A Business Deal
Megan's voice was loud, like she didn't care who heard.
Raymond stopped in his tracks, his eyes showing some emotion, maybe a bit of mockery.
He remembered Selena saying her marriage was great.
Guess it wasn't so happy after all.
But if she was so unhappy, why not just get a divorce? The fact that she held onto this marriage was confusing.
Did Selena really love her husband that much?
Selena looked at Megan, who was being totally unreasonable, and felt annoyed. She pulled out her phone and called Brian.
No answer. Selena started to get a bit anxious.
It was 96.8 degrees outside, and Brian was out there alone. If he got heatstroke and passed out, who would know?
Selena ordered, "Megan, come with me to pick up Uncle Brian."
Megan rolled her eyes, "Not unless you give me a hundred grand."
Selena thought she must be hearing things. How shameless could someone be?
Her eyes narrowed. "Last warning!"
Megan was about to repeat herself, but when she saw the cold look in Selena's eyes, she chickened out. She stammered, "What do you want?"
Selena had seen enough of Megan's bullying.
Selena said angrily, "Uncle Brian and Aunt Erin might put up with you, but I won't. Don't let me catch you doing anything wrong."
Megan looked guilty for a second but then puffed out her chest. "Stop threatening me! I didn't do anything wrong. Hasn't your family done enough to ruin me? I married Jacob in good faith, and he ran off, leaving me alone. He said he'd always take care of me, but he broke his promise. It's you who've wronged me all along!"
Selena didn't bother arguing and drove off to find Brian.
As she drove, she kept calling Brian, but no answer.
She was getting more anxious. After half an hour, she saw Brian collapsed by the roadside.
"Uncle Brian!" Selena was startled and quickly grabbed a bottle of water, pouring it on his face.
Brian slowly came to. Seeing Selena, he tried to speak but was too weak.
Selena helped him into the car, "I'll take you to the hospital."
Brian sat in the passenger seat, feeling dizzy.
He said weakly, "Selena, don't argue with Megan. What happened with her and Jacob is our fault. Jacob was so foolish. We got him a job at the Fair Group, and he ran off with tens of thousands of dollars from a client! He even gambled, losing over a hundred grand. Erin and I have been paying off high-interest loans ever since. Megan has been with us, always facing discrimination."
Selena gripped the steering wheel, feeling helpless.
It was true Jacob had run off with the client's money, almost causing the Fair Group to lose important projects.
James had only helped Brian because of Barbara. Who would've thought Jacob would be so ungrateful?
After that, they cut ties. Only when Selena came to pay respects to Barbara would Brian ask about James.
But James really held a grudge against the Layman family, so he always seemed to bristle with irritation whenever he knew she was going to see Brian.
Brian said, "If Megan said anything unpleasant, I apologize for her. I'm getting old now, and I just hope everyone can live peacefully."
Selena's face stayed neutral, but she felt a pang of sadness.
It seemed like no matter what, she was never the one chosen.
James chose Beatrice, and Brian chose Megan.
When Barbara passed away, she became the one always sacrificed. Even her marriage was just a business deal.
Everything was for the Fair family.
