Chapter 1397 The Gentleness That Melted His Heart
Tessa had reached rock bottom. At this point, she was willing to try anything—even if it cost her life.
She asked, "Who are you? How exactly do you plan to help me?"
The man rose and approached her bed.
"Lawrence can't bring himself to completely cut you off. Make yourself look more pitiful, then blame everything on Selena. There's still a chance to turn things around before they discover Selena's true identity. Your mother—or Lawrence—will confront Selena. But once Selena's real identity comes to light, you'll be finished for good."
Tessa's pupils constricted sharply. Who was this man? How did he know about Selena's true identity?
She clenched her fists. Could he be the one who sent her those messages?
The man slowly bent down, twirling his fingers through strands of her hair.
He continued, "Isn't Selena the person Ms. Smith despises most? If you create enough drama, Lawrence will naturally come back."
Malice instantly filled Tessa's eyes. "I'll do anything you want! Whatever it takes!"
The man smiled, his lips curving upward. "Good. I'll take you somewhere. Just follow my lead."
Tessa agreed without hesitation.
Satisfied, the man continued with his seductive proposition: "Jason's feelings toward you are actually quite complicated. He's spent years searching for his biological daughter, yet he never had the heart to throw you out. The Smiths value loyalty. If not for your final scheme, he wouldn't have been so harsh with you. After all, you were just a child when the switch happened. If you want to see him one last time before your 'death,' you could trick him into drinking poisoned alcohol. He'd follow you to the grave."
Tessa's eyes immediately lit up.
She loathed Selena and the Smith family more than anyone!
"That scheme wasn't my doing, but it doesn't matter anymore. Who planned it is irrelevant. Jason never cared about me—all he could see was his precious biological daughter!"
If only Jason had continued to cherish her instead of searching for his real daughter! Why couldn't he have just kept spoiling her? He deserved to die!
As for Selena, she was the wretched woman Tessa had always despised most.
"Help me, please. I'll sacrifice my dignity, my life—everything. I just want them to know they can't discard me like garbage. I'll make them regret abandoning me!"
When those born to privilege were forced to confront harsh reality, their emotions could spiral to unimaginable extremes.
This was precisely what the man intended to exploit. She was desperate enough—and foolish enough—to be useful. He could create endless trouble for Selena without risking anything himself.
Selena changed Raymond's bandages, noticing his intense gaze.
"What's wrong? Still in pain?"
Raymond shook his head, wrapping his arms around her waist. "I just feel like I'm living in a dream."
Waking up to her face every morning, sharing meals together, reading side by side—and her newfound gentleness that melted his heart.
Selena lowered her eyelashes, examining his gunshot wound carefully.
Though not fatal, it would leave a permanent scar.
Her fingertips gently traced over it, causing Raymond to shiver.
"Selena..."
Misreading his reaction, she rewrapped the bandage.
"The wound is scabbing over, but you still need to avoid sudden movements. We'll leave in another week."
Raymond's face fell immediately.
These past days, the most intimacy he'd experienced was her touch. It wasn't enough.
Selena restrained his wandering hands, her gaze steady. "Just a few more days, at least until the wound heals properly."
"Then let me kiss you."
Selena didn't refuse, but Raymond was never one to behave. What started as kissing quickly escalated.
By the time Selena realized what was happening, he was already pushing boundaries.
"Raymond, you—!"
She hadn't expected him to be so bold. Her body tensed, and she was tempted to slap him.
But seeing his weakened state from recovery, she couldn't bring herself to do it.
Raymond sensed her hesitation, but it only fueled his desire.
Selena pressed her forehead to his chest, her voice low and commanding. "Lie down. Don't move."
Raymond trembled with excitement, nearly losing control.
"Selena?"
Was she suggesting what he thought?
Eagerly, he embraced her and repositioned them both.
Straddling him, Selena couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze.
