Chapter 109 I Can Die without Regrets
Selena had been waiting here all night, never expecting to get grilled like this.
She bit her lip hard, her heart aching with a sour feeling. Just as she was about to snap back, she heard James coughing.
James was hacking pretty bad, so Selena handed him a tissue, noticing the specks of blood on it.
James saw it too, looking a bit surprised, but he shrugged it off, thinking it was just from getting worked up.
"Selena, I know you don't like Raymond. Did you have a boyfriend back when you were at Silver Bay University?" James asked.
Selena didn't answer, her mind stuck on the bloody tissue.
She had kept the truth from James, so he always thought he'd be back at the company soon.
James, not getting a response, felt a bit regretful.
He sighed and continued, "I was too greedy. I built the company bit by bit, and it's hard to let go now. That's why I had you marry Raymond. Besides, William likes you a lot. Marrying Raymond won't be a loss for you. You should know how many women in Silver Bay City want to be with him. Now that he's my son-in-law, I can die without regrets."
"Dad!" Selena wanted to stop him from saying that; she couldn't bear to hear the word "die."
"Even if I can't hold on and the company collapses, at least you'll have a backup. I'll give you ten percent of the shares another day, so you and Beatrice don't have to argue about it anymore."
After hurting her, he would always offer some comfort. This was James's usual tactic.
Selena couldn't bring herself to hate him completely, especially since he didn't have much time left.
"Selena, learn to get along with Raymond. As for your college boyfriend, you didn't even know his identity. He wouldn't reveal it to you, so how could he truly like you?"
Selena felt exhausted, agreed a few times, and then sat still.
Kenny had been standing respectfully on the other side of the bed. When he heard the sound of rain outside, he asked, "Ms. Fair, did you bring an umbrella?"
Selena shook her head, poured James a glass of water, her eyes filled with fatigue.
"Dad, forget the documents for now and take your medicine," Selena said.
James's face didn't look good. He waved his hand and said, "I know my own body. It's boring here anyway, so I might as well look at them."
Selena had nothing more to say. When she left the hospital, it was eleven at night. James mentioned a document at home that he hadn't brought, asking her to fetch it and bring it back.
Kenny had already left, and James didn't want to call him again. Beatrice was probably already asleep.
"Dad, why don't you just rest?" Selena said.
"Selena, after I finish reading that document, I'll hold a meeting tomorrow and then rest. The project was taken, and I need to re-establish cooperation with other companies," James replied.
Selena had no choice but to agree. However, halfway there, due to the rain, the car's tire got stuck in a pothole, blocking all the surrounding cars. The drivers came up one by one to ask, and those with bad tempers started cursing.
Selena felt embarrassed, and eventually, even the traffic police came.
Two of Selena's tires were blown, so she had to get out and stand.
Selena didn't have an umbrella and was soaked.
She sneezed, watching her car being towed away by the police, and the blocked road cleared. She thought about hailing a cab but realized she had left her bag and phone in the car.
Selena felt a bit helpless and a wave of weakness surged through her, possibly because of the person James had mentioned tonight.
Her eyes were a bit moist, and she decided to walk back to the Fair Mansion.
Not far away, Raymond's car moved slowly with the traffic. He held a pen in his hand, looking at Selena standing by the roadside.
Raindrops gathered on the car window, like a layer of crushed diamonds, reflecting the neon lights outside and softly illuminating his face.
Raymond's brows furrowed slightly.
Selena was about to cross the street when a car stopped in front of her.
The window rolled down, revealing Raymond's stern face.
"Mr. Montague." Selena greeted politely, but couldn't help sneezing because she was soaked.
