Chapter 1418 Desperate for the Child: A Selfish Longing
After the car stopped at the underground fighting arena, Raymond carried Selena all the way to the seventh floor.
With her chin resting on his shoulder, Selena could feel the tension radiating from him.
Once he laid her on the bed, Raymond went to the bathroom to run a bath. Lost in thought, he crouched beside the tub, oblivious as it filled to overflowing. Only when Selena, concerned about how long he'd been in there, came to check did she find water spilling onto the floor.
Startled back to reality, Raymond jumped up and hastily turned off the faucet.
"Pregnant women should be careful about taking baths," Selena said from the doorway. "I'll skip it tonight."
He froze, then drained the water. "Alright. Do you want to take your vitamins?"
Selena's silence made Raymond's heart sink. He knew he had no right to press her now. He understood how much she loved him, and that this pregnancy couldn't have come at a worse time.
But he wanted this child desperately. He was being selfish, and he knew it.
He turned on the shower head instead, adjusting it to a comfortable temperature.
"Selena, your robe is right there. You shower here—I'll use the one next door."
She nodded, noticing his soaked clothes as he left.
Under the warm spray, Selena's mind raced through everything: Christopher's address, BK, the research facility that could pose a massive threat to them. She still hadn't found Barbara, and now K might target her because of the pregnancy.
She sighed softly as she turned off the water.
In the adjacent bathroom, Raymond's thoughts were equally chaotic. He had no idea what he would do if Selena decided not to keep the baby.
When he finished showering and opened the door, he found Selena sitting on the bed, skimming through a book.
"Raymond, did you tell Mr. Butler I'm back?"
"I did. He still doesn't understand what the Smiths are thinking."
Selena nodded and patted the space beside her. "Let's talk."
Raymond's breathing quickened with anxiety as he slowly approached the bed and slipped under the covers.
"Go ahead," he said, licking his dry lips. "What did you want to discuss?"
"This baby's timing couldn't be worse."
At those words, pain spread through Raymond's chest. He could barely breathe, his palms sweating.
Selena set her book aside and rubbed her temples. "I'm worried about the complications this will cause."
Raymond's eyes reddened with emotion, but he knew he had to respect her decision, no matter how much it hurt.
"So you'll need to protect me properly from now on, understand? If something like tonight happens again, it could kill us both."
Raymond froze, looking up in disbelief to find her smiling at him.
Her hair had grown past her shoulders. She tucked a strand behind her ear.
"I've thought about it, and I want to keep the baby."
"Selena!" Raymond pulled her into a tight embrace, fighting back tears. "I thought..."
Selena nestled against him. "When I didn't respond earlier, I was just in shock. I really wasn't prepared for this."
"It's my fault. If I'd been more careful from the beginning—"
Embarrassed, Selena covered his mouth with her hand. "Enough. Go check on Richard—what was he doing following us here tonight?"
At the mention of the Smiths, Raymond's expression darkened. After how they'd treated her, sending her back would only subject her to more misery.
He replied, "I'll go see him now."
But the news that Selena wanted to keep their child had lifted his spirits completely. His previously downturned expression transformed into a smile, his entire demeanor rejuvenated.
He changed clothes and went downstairs to meet Richard, who, despite the late hour, was still staring expectantly at the seventh floor with no apparent intention of leaving.
