Chapter 1623 Surviving by Clinging to Obsession
The woman in the hat standing next to her seemed to sense her thoughts and gently patted her shoulder. "I want to go with you. I got some info about my brother being there before. I think he's still there."
But just then, Raymond's people stepped in. "Ms. Fair, Mr. Montague wants you to stay here and wait."
Right as he finished, his phone buzzed with an urgent call.
His eyes widened, and he quickly contacted the Vistalia underground fighting arena, the Farley family, the Smith family, and even the Perez family.
Selena noticed his expression change and grabbed his sleeve. "What's going on? Is there news about Raymond?"
"Yeah, Mr. Montague's research base is right at the earthquake's epicenter. We need a lot of help. Besides the earthquake and mudslides, it looks like some people are attacking them. Ms. Fair, I have to go help. Please stay at the hotel."
Selena couldn't just sit around. Watching the group leave in their cars, she turned to the woman in the hat beside her. "We'll take a motorcycle."
The woman in the hat glanced at her belly.
Selena was pretty slim, and only about two months pregnant, so she wasn't showing yet. But pregnant women are different from regular people.
She immediately started walking down, her tone urgent. "I'm fine. I have to go and see for myself, or I won't be at ease."
The woman in the hat quickly followed her, "If you're determined to go, I'll protect you."
Selena turned to look at her, "By the way, I don't know your name yet."
"I don't have a name. I was thrown into the underground fighting arena and then hired after I got out. My parents called me Nina."
"Nina?"
"Yeah."
"Then I'll call you that from now on."
The name sounded a bit childish, and Selena felt a bit awkward at first.
There were motorcycles outside the hotel. They both put on masks, and this time Nina drove.
Selena sat in the back and heard her say, "That place is a village where a disease outbreak happened. We don't know how it's spreading yet. Plus, with the earthquake, there are probably very few survivors. You... you need to be ready for that."
This was Nina giving Selena a heads-up.
Selena tugged at her mask, her tone firm, "He'll be fine, and your brother will survive too."
The people inside the base were surviving on sheer willpower, and the people outside were no different.
Nina didn't say anything more and drove the motorcycle forward.
After over two hours of riding, the air quality worsened, and the smell of smoke was everywhere.
Looking up, they saw people in white protective suits setting up barriers.
Seeing Selena and Nina's motorcycle, they immediately raised their guns. "Who are you? Turn back now!"
But the motorcycle ignored them and sped inside.
The group setting up the barriers watched the motorcycle disappear, confusion in their eyes.
People inside this area were desperately trying to get out, yet someone was voluntarily going in at this time.
Had they not received orders? Anyone entering this area couldn't leave.
This place had become a one-way gate to hell; going in now was a death sentence.
But they didn't think too much about it and quickly set up the barriers.
The barriers were electrified, and anyone touching them would be electrocuted instantly.
Additionally, armed guards were stationed nearby, ready to shoot anyone trying to escape.
Selena's motorcycle drove for another hour until the fuel ran out, and they finally saw the devastation ahead.
If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn't have believed it.
The mountain had collapsed halfway, uprooting all the trees, and floods were rushing down from the highest point.
The buried houses had only their tips visible, covered by layers of debris.
Selena's pupils contracted sharply, feeling weak all over.
The power of nature was terrifying. The roaring flood extended far into the distance before stopping, with many bodies washed ashore, their protective suits torn to shreds.
