Chapter 23

"My husband works late a lot. He's super busy, and I don't want to add to his stress," Selena said, rubbing her forehead to ease the double vision.

To avoid more confusion with Raymond, she grabbed the nearby handrail and motioned to him, "It's no big deal, Mr. Montague. Your car's over there. I'll walk you to it."

Raymond thought to himself, 'If Selena had passed out in the bathroom last night, it could've been really bad. Yet here she was, still worried about her husband.'

Raymond couldn't decide if Selena was just naive or really in love with her husband.

For some reason, Raymond remembered all the times he'd misunderstood her. Feeling a bit guilty, he said, "I'll take you to the hospital first."

Selena took a step down the stairs and almost fell.

Raymond quickly grabbed her and pulled her back.

"Penny?" Raymond whispered.

Selena was at her limit. It took all her willpower to stay composed in the restaurant, and now, out in the sunlight, she felt even dizzier.

She knew Raymond was calling her, but it felt like her throat was sealed shut, and she couldn't answer.

Raymond felt her burning up and was amazed she had held on this long.

He touched her forehead. The coolness of his fingers seemed to comfort her, and she couldn't help but nuzzle against them.

Raymond's hand stiffened, and he quickly pulled it back, startled.

Given their long working relationship, he couldn't just ignore Selena's condition.

Raymond frowned, then bent down and scooped Selena up in his arms.

But as soon as he reached the street corner, a car pulled up. The window rolled down, and there was Matthew.

Matthew didn't know Selena had closed the deal. Seeing Raymond, he thought he'd say hi and make a good impression, but his eyes widened when he saw Raymond holding Selena.

Raymond recognized Matthew too. He was the guy who had been with Selena in the elevator that night. Raymond had thought they were involved in something shady.

But if they weren't, who was the person who slapped Selena afterward?

Matthew quickly got out of the car, reaching out to take Selena.

Raymond squinted, "And who are you?"

Matthew didn't expect Raymond to remember their high school days, so he nervously introduced himself, "I'm her boss."

Raymond looked away, piecing things together. So, the person who slapped Selena that day was Matthew's wife?

Raymond turned and gently placed Selena in the back seat of his car. "She's got a high fever. I'm taking her to the hospital now."

Seeing Raymond about to drive off with Selena, Matthew got anxious, "Can I come with you? You might not remember, but we were high school classmates..."

Raymond wasn't thrilled about having strangers in his car, but the mention of their high school connection jogged a vague memory.

"Alright." Raymond nodded.

Matthew initially wanted to sit in the back to take care of Selena, but Raymond opened the other side and got in first.

Matthew hesitated but didn't want to make Raymond his driver, so he took the driver's seat.

The car was quiet until a slight bump caused Selena to slide weakly onto Raymond's lap, her breath brushing against his suit.

Raymond stiffened and glanced at Matthew, who was focused on driving.

Matthew didn't notice, concentrating on the road and honking the horn. "The nearest hospital is Cybernia Hospital. She goes there often."

"Is she in poor health?" Raymond asked.

"No, her sister has been hospitalized for a long time," Matthew replied instinctively.

Raymond propped Selena up, worried she might hit the window. In the end, he placed a hand to cushion her head.

Matthew saw this through the rearview mirror and was surprised.

Matthew had thought Raymond was hard to approach, but he turned out to be quite considerate.

Matthew drove quickly, reaching the hospital in just fifteen minutes.

Matthew wanted to get out and help Selena, but saw her nestled against Raymond's shoulder, eyes closed.

Matthew was immediately concerned that Selena might have offended Raymond, as everyone knew Raymond wasn't one to easily engage with women.

But seeing Raymond's calm demeanor, Matthew didn't say anything. He bent down to help Selena, who was clinging to Raymond.

Matthew looked at him awkwardly. "Well..."

Raymond remained unfazed, moving aside slightly.

Matthew quickly helped Selena up and said sincerely, "I'll take her to the hospital right away. Once she wakes up, I'll have her thank you in person."

Raymond leaned against the car, glancing at Selena a few more times, his tone indifferent. "She's in this condition, shouldn't you notify her husband?"
