Chapter 1446 Wear Down the Fondness in Her Heart

Ann rubbed her temples, trying to shake off the stress. "Just ignore her. I'm not going anywhere."

Luckily, the company was tight-knit. Ann had faced worse from Connie before, and everyone was used to it. Thanks to Selena's leadership, no one gossiped about her personal life.

Ann felt grateful to Selena. In any other company, being insulted like that as the CEO's assistant would have stripped her of authority, and no one would listen to her anymore.

But at S.M Corporation, everyone treated Emily's insults like background noise and continued to cooperate as usual.

The more united the company was, the more Ann wanted to work hard, feeling she hadn't done enough.

It felt like a big family here, with everyone waiting for Selena to return.

Betty pulled out a few boxes of candy from her bag.

"Look, you need to take care of yourself. Either crash in Ms. Fair's lounge for half an hour, or we're heading out to the banquet soon."

Ann paused, feeling touched. "I'm fine, really."

Betty knew she couldn't convince her, so she let it go.

As she turned to leave, Ann asked, "You haven't been hanging out with Nathan much lately, have you?"

Nathan's pursuit of Betty was already well-known in their circle. Everyone assumed Betty had his protection, so those investors looking to exploit her didn't dare cause trouble, and directors treated her with respect.

"Not really, but he's always hanging around my set."

Betty frowned, her tone flat, as if Nathan was a stranger to her.

"Ann, if you run into trouble, remember to tell me. You can still use Nathan if needed. Ms. Fair taught me that—don't hesitate to use resources when necessary. Nathan owes me."

Ann knew she was referring to Emily. If Nathan intervened, Emily would likely stop bothering her.

But she didn't need that.

She even masochistically hoped Emily would be more extreme, to wear down her feelings and maybe let go of Paul.

But she knew Paul had already rooted himself in her heart, and it wouldn't be easy to remove him.

At eight o'clock, the three of them arrived at the banquet in a stretch Lincoln.

Betty and Sophia were dressed to the nines, while Ann wore her professional attire.

She had just greeted Lucille, her current collaborator, when she caught sight of Paul out of the corner of her eye.

Paul's height made him stand out in the crowd.

He was impatiently holding a wine glass, casually greeting people around him, then turning his head away, lost in thought.

Ann's confident conversation with Lucille abruptly halted, as if she had hit a snag.

The company was currently filming Lucille's script, a major production Selena had arranged before she left, requiring significant time and effort.

Lucille followed her gaze and shook her head. "Trying to pursue Paul, huh? That might be tough."

Ann stiffened, about to deny it, but decided it wasn't necessary.

Lucille clinked her glass against Ann's. "Alex once tried to introduce me to Raymond. Raymond is indifferent to women, but Paul isn't just indifferent—he's hostile. It seems to be related to his childhood."

Ann felt like she had accidentally overheard a secret and instinctively stared at Lucille.

Lucille chuckled and added, "I only know he was kidnapped as a child and encountered some twisted old women. He was young, around ten, probably not subjected to anything too extreme, but definitely harassed. Those women liked kids. The Adams family found him three days later, lying in a pool of blood—not his, but the women's. A child killed three old women. No one knows how he did it, and no one dares to ask."

She glanced around. "I don't want to gossip, but you seem to like him. His attitude towards women is like that. I've never heard of anyone succeeding."
