Chapter 96 Was Selena Playing Hard-to-Get?
John asked, "Should we call the folks over at Ashbourne Manor?"
"Go ahead," Raymond replied, sounding totally uninterested. Just thinking about seeing Selena again made him inexplicably annoyed.
Raymond was always on time, but Selena had flaked on him twice now.
It was just plain rude.
John pulled out his phone and dialed the number for Ashbourne Manor.
When Fiona picked up, she was taken aback. Raymond was coming over tonight.
After hanging up, she quickly hid Max in the back room and made sure every inch of the place was spotless, not a single dog hair in sight.
The staff worked fast and efficiently, and since they cleaned daily, they were done in less than half an hour.
Fiona sighed in relief, then remembered Selena wasn't back yet. She wondered if she should give her a heads-up.
Just as she reached for her phone, she heard a car engine outside. She rushed out, only to see an unfamiliar car.
It was a black Maybach.
Raymond had arrived!
Fiona quickly put her phone down and went to greet him. "Mr. Montague."
Even though Raymond wasn't a fan of Ashbourne Manor, he wasn't the type to take it out on the staff, so he nodded.
Fiona became even more respectful. "Mrs. Montague has already sent over your belongings and told the chef about your preferences. If there's anything you're not comfortable with, just let me know. I'm the nanny Mr. William Montague left to take care of Ms. Fair."
Raymond looked at Fiona without saying a word.
Noticing his cold demeanor, Fiona quickly led him to the master bedroom.
"Mr. Montague, this is your room, and the one at the end of the hallway is Ms. Fair's," Fiona said.
Raymond glanced down the hallway. The rooms were far enough apart that they wouldn't bother each other.
He pushed the door open and walked in.
Fiona stood at the door, and once it closed, she let out a slow breath.
Raymond's presence was intense, and he seemed very cold. This was his first visit to Ashbourne Manor in three years. She wondered if he and Selena could get along peacefully.
Fiona had been so busy instructing the staff to clean up the dog hair that she forgot to call Selena. By this time, Selena had already arrived at the front door.
Selena was pretty worn out today because of James.
Entering the house, she didn't see Fiona and went straight to her bedroom.
She didn't know if it was just her imagination, but she felt a stranger's presence in the villa tonight, and it was suffocating.
Just as she finished washing up, she heard Fiona's voice outside, "Ms. Fair, the warm milk is ready."
Selena had just cracked open the door when she heard Fiona say, "I also prepared a glass for Mr. Montague. I'll bring it to him shortly."
Selena froze, thinking she had misheard.
"Is Raymond here?" Selena was so surprised she called him by his first name.
Fiona then remembered she had been so busy directing the staff that she forgot to inform Selena. She nodded. "Mr. Montague is in the master bedroom now. Do you want to go see him, Ms. Fair?"
Selena quickly took the milk and said, "Fiona, call me after he leaves tomorrow morning. I won't be coming down for breakfast."
Fiona wasn't clueless; she realized Selena was avoiding Raymond.
She didn't understand why and didn't ask further. "Alright, Ms. Fair, then you should rest early."
Selena closed the door, her heart pounding.
It wasn't excitement but the fear of being exposed by Raymond.
Luckily, Selena hadn't run into Raymond when she came back, or that would have been truly awkward.
She finished her warm milk, thinking she should visit William at The Montague Villa tomorrow. It was indeed impolite to miss the appointment today.
In the master bedroom, Raymond's door was knocked on. He frowned, wondering if Selena had returned.
He got up to open the door, and outside stood Fiona with a glass of warm milk.
"Mr. Montague, do you usually drink this before bed? Since Ms. Fair has this habit, I prepared a glass for you as well," Fiona said.
Raymond asked, confused, "Is she back?"
Logically, since Raymond hadn't visited in three years, and given the Fair family's eagerness to please the Montague family, he thought she would at least come to greet him tonight.
Fiona nodded. "Yes, Ms. Fair is already asleep."
Raymond felt a strange sense of being ignored. He took the milk, thanked her, and closed the door.
