Chapter 1505 This Is the Siege
The car sped through the night, passing scenes of devastation—flames licking at buildings, distant screams piercing the air. Mario had single-handedly transformed the entire Inner Island into a living hell.
Selena nestled against Raymond's chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breathing as tears stung her eyes. Raymond held her in silence, his palm moving in slow, comforting circles across her back for what felt like an eternity.
When they reached Eldon's location, they found him standing in the courtyard, his gaze fixed on the distant fires and explosions painting the horizon. His eyes widened in shock at Raymond's arrival.
"Christ, I thought you were dead!" Eldon rushed forward, relief washing over his features when he confirmed Raymond was unharmed.
Raymond glanced skyward, and Eldon followed his gaze. Helicopters circled overhead like vultures, their allegiance unknown.
"Eldon, get in. We're out of time."
Eldon immediately climbed into the vehicle. The chaos consuming the Inner Island had cleared the roads leading to the Outer Island—a silver lining in the madness. Raymond floored the accelerator, ignoring every checkpoint and barrier, smashing through them like they were made of paper.
Those who had long dreamed of entering the Middle or Inner Islands seized the opportunity. Once they saw the destroyed checkpoints, they swarmed inward like moths to flame. Outer Island residents pushed toward the Middle Island, while Middle Island dwellers fought to reach the Inner Island. The once-empty roads suddenly teemed with desperate crowds rushing toward what they believed was salvation—a scene reminiscent of the apocalypse.
Eldon watched the frenzied masses from his window seat, a bitter smile crossing his lips. "It's like that old saying—those outside the fortress want in, while those inside want out."
He closed his eyes, shutting out the chaos.
Raymond brought the car to a halt at Psychiatric Hospital. Someone was already waiting, immediately escorting them inside. The doors opened to reveal over a dozen people in medical coats, bound and seated on the floor.
"Mr. Montague, these are the doctors who tried to flee."
"Where's the person I asked you to find?"
"In the basement."
Raymond descended immediately, Selena still cradled in his arms. The basement was suffocating—windowless and airless. Anyone confined here for years would surely suffer physically.
A woman sat on the edge of a bed, cloth wrapped around her eyes, rendering her both blind and deaf. Her silence was absolute. A heavy chain bound her ankle, and the basement featured its own bathroom with every sharp edge padded with fabric. Despite being in her fifties, she appeared decades younger than her peers, dressed in pristine white.
How could they communicate with someone who could neither see nor hear?
Left with no alternatives, Raymond turned to his companion. "Bring her with us. Before you searched this place, were there any other suspicious individuals?"
"The hospital doctors were conducting experiments on living subjects, but no one knew the identity of the woman in the basement. They weren't even aware this basement existed until we arrived. The only person who brought her meals was a deaf-mute."
Raymond felt certain this woman was Octavia.
"Take her."
As he turned to leave with Selena, they attempted to free Octavia. Unable to unlock the ankle restraint, they had to break the chain through brute force. But as they helped her toward the exit, she suddenly collapsed as if struck by lightning, taking her two escorts down with her.
Raymond had walked several paces before noticing no one was following. When he turned back, he found all three sprawled on the ground.
His brow furrowed in confusion.
Selena spoke up then, "I heard electrical sparking."
Raymond carefully set her down. "Let me check."
Unable to move, Selena could only blink in response. But when her gaze fell upon the fallen woman, her heart clenched painfully.
Who had imprisoned Octavia here? Who had stolen her sight and hearing?
The agony in her chest intensified as she stared at the three motionless figures. Outside, explosions continued to rock the night—the Outer Island was descending into chaos as well. Time was running out.
