Chapter 1587 Love Beyond Logic
Betty brought food up to Ann's hospital room, where Ronald and Sophia had remained throughout the day, none of them having left yet.
Since Betty had to leave that evening, she quickly briefed Ann on what needed to be done. "I won't have any time off for the next month. The doctor says you can slowly start chewing soft foods, so Sophia and I will help you sit up—it wouldn't be appropriate for Ronald to handle this."
Ronald cleared his throat pointedly and gestured toward the hallway. "Should I step outside then?"
Sophia's eyes immediately lit up as she grabbed his arm. "Ronald, I'll come with you." She shot Betty a series of meaningful looks.
Betty knew Sophia had been pursuing the thirty-something man for ages, though he remained oblivious to her advances.
She rubbed her temples wearily. "Fine, both of you can wait outside."
Sophia practically bounced over to Ann, grabbing her hand and planting exaggerated kisses on it. "Betty will just help you eat a little something, Ann. I'll be back in soon." With that, she practically dragged Ronald out of the room.
Ronald looked distinctly uncomfortable as he was led away, while Ann said nothing, allowing Betty to help her sit up. Her throat was still raw, limiting her to bland, soft foods.
"I ran into Paul and Elara in the elevator earlier—they were all over each other," Betty said casually, watching Ann's reaction carefully.
Ann couldn't speak yet without aggravating her throat, so she simply lowered her lashes and ate quietly.
Betty's heart ached watching her. Having been burned by a man herself, she desperately wanted to spare Ann the same fate.
"Ann, I might sound harsh, but you saw what happened to me with Nathan—complete devastation. You've worked so hard to build what you have now. I don't want to see you destroy yourself over this. Elara strikes me as trouble."
Betty suspected the woman might even be behind the recent attack—there had been something murderous in her eyes, especially when it came to anything involving Paul.
What started as well-intentioned advice quickly turned painful when Betty looked down to see tears streaming silently down Ann's face. There was no hysteria, just quiet weeping.
With her neck wrapped in bandages, Ann could barely speak, managing only meaningless fragments of words.
Betty's heart clenched, but she forced herself to continue the difficult conversation. "I checked your phone records. You called Paul that night, but he was at the hospital with Elara—apparently she'd been poisoned, and your mother was the one who did it. Your mother's been arrested, and we're not sure how the Adams and Reed families plan to handle this. They probably won't dare touch our company given Mr. Montague and Ms. Fair's protection, but you're fair game. You need to be extremely careful going forward."
She wouldn't be in Silver Bay City for the next month, traveling for filming commitments, leaving her unable to look after Ann.
Ann nodded slowly and continued eating mechanically.
Betty reached for tissues and gently wiped Ann's cheeks. "Paul wasn't the one who saved you that night. I checked with the hospital—you were brought in by someone from the Harper family, probably Shelley."
Ann blinked and nodded again, then ate a little more before fatigue overtook her.
Betty helped her lie back down. "Rest up here at the hospital. Ronald will handle company matters temporarily."
Betty had long since learned life's harsh lessons, and she felt a kinship with Ann—they both understood what the company and Selena meant to each other.
Both women regarded Selena as their savior, and Betty couldn't bear the thought of losing either Selena or Ann.
But matters of the heart defied logic, and if Ann was determined to throw herself headlong into this situation, no one could stop her.
