Chapter 207 Making James Disappointed in Selena
Beatrice sighed, "Honey, I'm really sorry. I was just so worried you'd get too upset."
James clutched his chest, feeling the anger coursing through him.
This time, it was definitely his fault. He thought his old classmate, who he hadn't heard from in ages, showed up because the Fair family's second round of financing went well.
And it just so happened that Selena was a designer, so they could work together in the future. It seemed like a win-win.
He shot Beatrice a dark look. "Isn't that exactly what you were thinking?"
Beatrice's heart skipped a beat, realizing James was genuinely pissed.
Reid's actions were meant to mess with Selena, but Beatrice's little additions made her true feelings clear, making James rethink if he had been too harsh on Selena.
He believed everything he did was for her own good.
James's cold expression softened when he saw Alice coming down the stairs. She looked pale and upset. Seeing James angry, her eyes welled up, and she quickly wiped them.
"Dad, I'm sorry. Are you arguing with my sister again because of me?"
Hearing her voice, James felt his anger melt away.
Alice had always been in poor health, and she was his biological daughter. Marrying Beatrice later had somewhat affected Alice's health.
So he always felt guilty towards Alice.
Plus, Alice was very understanding and treated Selena well.
"It's not your fault."
Alice let out a sigh of relief and quickly walked down the stairs, holding Beatrice's arm.
"Dad, don't be mad at Mom. Because of my health, Mom's been worried all these years. Sometimes, her words might be sharp, but she doesn't mean it."
A few words from Alice instantly calmed James down.
But he still glared at Beatrice and went back to his room upstairs.
Downstairs, Alice looked at Beatrice.
"Mom, you need to be more careful next time. Dad's not stupid. Don't rush things. We've waited this long; there's no need to hurry now."
Beatrice realized she had slipped up tonight, making James suspicious. She knew she'd have to smooth things over later.
When they went to bed, Beatrice saw that James was still giving her the cold shoulder, so she brought up some old memories.
"Honey, remember when your career was just taking off, and you were super busy every day? I was holding Alice and didn't dare to bother you. She cried every day, and one day she cried so much she lost her voice. I called you, and it was raining when you came over."
Back then, James was swamped, and taking care of Selena made him neglect Beatrice.
Now that Beatrice mentioned it, the last bit of his anger faded away.
"How could I forget? You slipped and fell while holding an umbrella for me."
Because of this shared memory, they moved closer to each other.
Beatrice took the chance to bring it up.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things about Selena. I thought Reid's company was doing great and could help Selena in the future. But I forgot that Selena is a girl, and this could really harm her."
James was no longer angry, but he added, "This time it was my oversight. Once Selena calms down, I'll talk to her about transferring some shares. I previously transferred her mother's shares to you. Considering this incident, I'm planning to give her fifteen percent."
Beatrice's eyes widened, and she gritted her teeth in frustration.
Why not just give the whole company to that brat?
She took a deep breath, knowing she couldn't argue now, or it would make James suspicious.
There would be time to maneuver later, so she put on a gracious front.
"Honey, the company is yours. It's your decision."
James was completely pacified now and patted her back. "Let's sleep."
Beatrice turned her back to him, her eyes filled with resentment.
She had only received ten percent of the shares so far, giving her a say in the company. Alice still had no shares, and Nick was only allowed to join the company to learn. If Selena got fifteen percent, she would truly have a stake in the family.
So, she had to come up with a plan quickly to dispel James's guilt and make him disappointed in Selena.
