Chapter 33
Raymond's hand froze mid-flip through the documents, his eyes slowly lifting with a confused look.
Grace chuckled, "Carter wouldn't keep even you in the dark, would he?"
Grace knew Carter was usually a bit scared of Raymond, but she didn't think he'd be so scared that he wouldn't even tell him about having a girlfriend.
"Carter said he's too busy to spend time with his girlfriend. I figured since you picked that girl's design, she must be pretty good. And she looks quite nice," Grace said.
"Are you talking about Penny?" Raymond's brow furrowed. Wasn't she married?
Grace smiled, "Yeah, it's the first time I've been so satisfied with Carter's girlfriend. Since she's working with you, do me a favor and don't make things too hard for her. Who knows, we might be family in the future."
Raymond's expression turned cold. "Don't worry, I'll keep that in mind."
Grace stood up, and Raymond got up to personally escort her to the private elevator.
Grace suddenly stopped, remembering something, "Raymond, now that Carter's settled down, you should think about yourself. We haven't seen much of your wife, and we don't even know what she looks like. Since my father likes her, she must have some good qualities. Why not give it a try?"
"Aunt Grace, there's no way I could have anything to do with her," Raymond responded.
Grace knew Raymond was always decisive and put her sunglasses back on. "Take care of yourself and don't skip meals. Your stomach issues are already quite severe."
Raymond showed a hint of helplessness. "Got it."
After seeing Grace off, Raymond turned and went back to his office.
John came in with coffee and noticed Raymond's cold expression. He couldn't help but ask, "Did Mr. Ashford get into trouble again?"
Raymond sneered, "Not exactly trouble, just took a liking to someone else's wife."
John's mouth twitched slightly; he always knew Carter changed girlfriends frequently, but how had his interests suddenly shifted so unpredictably this time?
Raymond's eyes darkened. Carter was being immature, but why was Selena messing around, too?
Didn't she always say she loved her husband?
Raymond lowered his gaze and saw the message he sent to his nominal wife last night.
Frowning, Raymond set a specific time to text over: [Twelve o'clock sharp.]
Selena had just gotten out of Carter's car when she received the reminder.
She took it out and remembered she needed to discuss the divorce with Raymond.
"Mr. Ashford, thank you," Selena said.
Carter rolled down the front window, smiling brightly, "Catch ya later! You're officially a friend now."
Selena found it amusing and smiled slightly.
After Carter left, Selena walked to the apartment entrance. Just as she stepped inside, a weak voice called from behind.
"Selena."
Selena paused and turned to see Alice standing pale under a tree not far away.
No wonder she hadn't seen her earlier; Alice was standing in a blind spot.
"Alice? Why are you out of the hospital?" Alice coughed lightly, filled with many questions.
Who was that stranger who just brought Selena back?
Although Carter was driving a multi-million-dollar luxury car and looked quite handsome, Alice was sure he wasn't Raymond.
A long time ago, Alice had seen Raymond from a distance and thought he looked like a nobleman straight out of a painting, unforgettable at first glance.
Carter was good, but compared to Raymond, he fell short.
"I had Dad arrange for my discharge. I wanted to recuperate at home. Selena, aren't you coming back to The Fair Manor for dinner tonight? Did you forget today is my birthday?" Alice said.
Selena was never quite sure about Alice's attitude towards her. It was understandable that Beatrice didn't like her, but Alice was at least polite.
"I didn't forget. I'm going back to The Fair Manor tonight, but I have some other things to do at noon. Once I'm done, I'll head back. Here's your gift," Selena said.
She took out the necklace she had bought. Carter had given her one, but it felt indecent to give someone else's gift to another person.
So she bought one herself, the same style.
Alice opened the box with some surprise, "Thank you, Selena. I really like it!"
Seeing Alice flushed, Selena worried she might catch a cold and get sick, so she brought the car around. "Get in, I'll take you back first."
Alice nodded and sat in the passenger seat.
"Selena, Dad might bring up the Montague family again tonight. Be prepared."
Selena pressed her lips together, having already anticipated it. "Okay."
Alice hesitated for a moment and couldn't help but ask, "Selena, do you really not like Raymond?"
