Chapter 26

Shelley was always the type to cut to the chase, no beating around the bush.

Selena's eyes dropped, feeling a bit let down.

James was getting up there in age, and his already shaky business sense was only getting worse, making it tough for him to make smart calls.

Shelley noticed Selena's mood and decided to switch gears. "What did you mean by paying you on time? Did you do business with Raymond?"

"Yeah, I got hired to design the house at Manston Manor," Selena replied.

Shelley's eyes went wide, and she couldn't help but give a thumbs up. "Selena, you've got some serious vision, designing the future home for Raymond's first love? Or maybe even his second wife."

Selena laughed and admitted, "Raymond doesn't even know I'm his wife."

Shelley's face twisted in surprise before she finally gave a nod of respect. "I underestimated you. So you kept your name hidden on purpose, just to mess with Raymond when he finds out who designed the house. That's genius."

Selena laughed, her earlier disappointment fading away.

She didn't mention the one-night stand with Raymond; that was a secret she'd keep forever.

Later, the doctor came in to remove the IV, and Shelley took care of Selena's discharge papers.

As they got into the car, Shelley couldn't help but ask, "So, how soon do you think you can get a divorce? Honestly, with a guy like Raymond, you should hang on to him if you can; just having that face around is a win."

Besides his top-notch business skills, Raymond had the family background and looks, the latter being just a bonus.

"Forget it, I never thought about having anything with Raymond," Selena said.

Shelley hit the gas, shaking her head. "Only you could resist. Any other woman would be clinging to Raymond. When you married him three years ago, women all over Silver Bay City were crying their eyes out."

If Selena hadn't been so low-key and rarely appeared in public, she would've been a target long ago.

Selena smiled, not taking Shelley's words to heart.

Raymond was just a client she was about to work with, nothing more.

Selena needed to get the floor plan of Manston Manor and start brainstorming the design.

This was a rare chance. Whether she could fully break into the upper social circle where Raymond belonged depended on this.

Selena had to give it her all.

Shelley dropped Selena off at her apartment and kept reminding her. "It's good that Raymond doesn't know your identity; it'll save you trouble later. Selena, you have to protect yourself. No matter how high Raymond stands, he's still a man."

Shelley blew a kiss and drove off.

Selena stood there for a moment, then shook her head and smiled.

Back in her apartment, she realized she hadn't gotten Raymond's contact info yet.

She could ask someone from the Montague family, but if they found out she didn't have Raymond's contact after three years of marriage, who knows what they'd say behind her back.

After some thought, Selena decided to text Carter, but as she was typing the message, she got a friend request on Facebook.

It was Raymond.

Selena paused, finding it hard to believe that Raymond would reach out first.

But then she remembered her contact info was on that photo.

Selena quickly sat up straight and accepted the request.

She texted: [Mr. Montague, thank you for taking me to the hospital.]

Raymond didn't reply, and Selena didn't expect him to. She sent the message out of courtesy and then started browsing various art pieces, hoping to get some inspiration.

Selena had two phone numbers: one for work, which she gave to clients, and a personal number for family and friends.

The number on the photo was her work number.

Just as she was about to get up, she received a text on her personal phone: [Meet at Montague Manor tomorrow morning. We need to talk.]
