Chapter 1484 When Restlessness Feels Like a Curse
As Emilio was leaving, he took one last, lingering look at the pile of ashes, a peculiar restlessness stirring in his chest.
He couldn't quite explain it, but the irritation felt like a curse, lingering in his mind.
He rarely felt this way, except when he killed someone.
For now, he didn't want to delve into it. Sparing Selena's life was already a huge act of mercy on his part.
Selena, carrying the human bones wrapped in a few pieces of cloth, had walked less than three miles before she passed out.
Her whole body ached, and she felt as if she were running a fever—so hot she was burning up.
Someone gently held her by the waist. She didn't know who it was and didn't have the strength to open her eyes to see.
When she woke up, she was on a small bed.
The sunset outside the window cast a warm, harmonious glow.
There was an IV needle in the back of her hand.
She frowned and tried to pull the needle out, but just then, the door opened, and Mario walked in.
Selena stiffened, her eyes scanning him several times. Was he back to normal?
Mario walked closer and sat on the stool by the bed.
"Feeling better?"
"Are you back to normal?"
There was a scar on his forehead, probably from last night.
Last night, both she and Emilio were gone, so Mario must have gone out looking for them and accidentally hit his head.
He touched the scar, his gaze intense and aggressive.
It made Selena very uncomfortable.
"More or less."
With just a glance, Selena knew: this was Mario, not Christopher.
Christopher's gaze was always warm, never shifting or dangerous like this.
Mario, in this moment, was nearly bristling with aggression.
Selena closed her eyes, not wanting to engage with him.
Mario also remained silent, the two seemingly in a standoff.
After a while, he opened the box he had brought.
"I brought you some porridge. Eat it."
Selena was indeed weak. Her wounds seemed to have been treated, and she didn't want to think about who had changed her clothes.
She took the spoon and quietly drank a sip, hearing Mario say, "I saw Raymond."
Her hand paused, and she looked up, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "He's on the island?"
"Yes, but he's surrounded by people and can't come to meet us right now."
Selena sighed in relief. As long as Raymond was on the island, it was fine.
"Get your strength back. I'll keep in touch with him, and he should come to see you in a few days."
Selena nodded, feeling utterly exhausted.
After finishing the porridge, she curled up under the blanket and fell asleep.
Mario took the dishes out and tossed them into a nearby trash can.
He looked up at the sky, a complex expression in his eyes.
The wound on his forehead still throbbed. Last night, when he realized Emilio and Selena hadn't returned, he left the tent alone.
He didn't know how long he walked before encountering a group of troublesome men.
Driven by a survival instinct, he fought them off but accidentally hit his head and passed out.
When he woke up, his mind was clear, and he had gained a new memory. No wonder Christopher was so tight-lipped about that so-called human experiment. This was the truth.
He took a deep breath and punched the wall hard.
His knuckles were bloody, but he seemed not to feel the pain, just pressing his lips together in a grim line.
Selena trusted the naive Mario but not the clear-headed Mario.
So when she realized he was back to normal, she became very cold.
She would eat the food he brought, but she refused to believe anything he said.
He said Raymond was on middle island, but she wouldn't believe it until Raymond actually came to see her.
But was Raymond really captured that night?
She had been tortured and wanted to find him, but now she had to stay here to recover, not knowing how he was doing.
She was very worried, and the worry made her stomach hurt a bit.
This emotional turmoil wasn't good for the baby.
She took a few deep breaths, forcing herself to rest.
But out of the corner of her eye, she saw the pile of bones not far away, and the piercing pain spread again.
Emilio, the boy who grew up in Mystic Prison and longed for the light, was dead, burned to ashes in a fire.
Fate had been truly unfair to him.
