Chapter 1450 Outer Island
Only three of them got through security. It wasn't for lack of trying on Selena's part — the place only opens twice a year, and only three people are allowed in each time. They'd paid handsomely for the privilege.
Moreover, entering the Mystic Prison came with a particularly nasty rule.
To prevent outsiders from teaming up and disrupting the operations inside, everyone who entered would be drugged and separated from their companions upon waking.
Selena had already learned about these details from the note Clifton had given her, but seeing the densely carved rules on the stone tablet still made her feel intensely uncomfortable.
Living in modern society for so long, it was hard to accept such rules.
Raymond stood beside her, cupping her face in his hands.
"Once you're inside, don't rush to find me. Take care of yourself."
After saying this, he looked worriedly at Selena's belly.
"Selena, I really wish you would go back."
This place wasn't suitable for her, and who knew when they would be able to leave.
"I'll be fine." Selena's expression was calm as she handed over her gun. "You take care of yourself too."
She glanced at Mario, who looked indifferent, and frowned. "Are you sure it's okay to bring him along? He'll be separated from us."
"No choice, we need him."
Christopher could provide clues and likely knew more information, but he was hesitant to reveal too much due to Mario's presence.
The guard's eyes lit up when he saw Selena, then he shook his head.
"It's been years since a woman went in. So beautiful, I wonder what crime she committed to hide in the Mystic Prison."
In their eyes, unless someone had committed a crime so heinous that every country was after them, they wouldn't voluntarily enter.
After all, it was the Mystic Prison, a place that used to be filled with mental hospitals and still served as one. There were more mental hospitals inside than bars outside.
Selena looked at the guard. "The drug used to knock us out, is it safe for pregnant women?"
The guard was taken aback, then frowned.
"You're pregnant? What are you doing going in there? Don't say I didn't warn you, it's not suitable for women, especially not for a pregnant woman."
"Is it harmful or not?"
"It's not harmful."
"Then it's fine."
The three of them entered a dark place, and dizziness quickly overcame them.
When Selena opened her eyes again, she found herself surrounded by people in hospital gowns. She rubbed her forehead and saw the bright sunlight.
Three islands connected together, and Selena wasn't sure if she was on the outer island, the middle island, or the inner island.
Finding Raymond and Mario right away was impossible.
Fortunately, there was one thing inside that connected to the outside world: money.
Outside money could be used here, and credit cards could be swiped.
However, the rulers of this place seemed intent on cutting off the island's inhabitants from the outside world, so things like cell phones were extremely expensive, costing an average person's annual salary. They were symbols of status and couldn't make calls to the outside world.
Most communication was done by shouting or using pigeons.
The internet couldn't access outside information either.
A thunderstorm was brewing, and it looked like it was going to rain.
Selena quickly went to a nearby store to buy an umbrella. As she stepped out, she saw a high school-aged boy being beaten up.
The ones beating him were also high school students, wearing the same uniform but looking much more intimidating.
Apart from communication, everything else inside was similar to the outside world.
Selena grabbed a mop from beside the store and walked over to the group.
"What are you doing? Ganging up on someone?"
The high school students, almost adults, weren't afraid of her.
"Get lost! Don't interfere, lady!"
One of them swung a punch, which Selena deftly dodged, and jabbed the broom handle into his head.
At that moment, she felt grateful for K's training, especially since she had done it with her eyes closed. Handling a few unruly high school students was a piece of cake.
The boys lay on the ground, groaning, looking at her like she was a demon, and quickly scrambled away.
Selena looked at the boy standing in the corner. He leaned silently against the wall, giving her a cold glance before she turned to leave.
She was surprised. She had helped him, yet he was so indifferent?
As he passed by her, she caught a whiff of a medicinal scent.
Someone in his family was seriously ill.
Selena had just arrived and was unfamiliar with the power dynamics on the island, except that she knew about the four major families on the inner island.
The boy didn't want to talk to her, and she didn't want to cause trouble. She had just acted on impulse.
As she was about to leave, she noticed the cube-shaped jellyfish tattoo on the back of his neck.
She froze and immediately spoke up, "Wait."
