Chapter 1504 Why Do You Get Everything?
The bitter taste of defeat consumed him entirely.
Mario's gaze shifted from Raymond to Selena, and after a few seconds, he let out a cold, mirthless laugh. "The needles embedded in her body—unless I choose to remove them, she'll remain a vegetable for the rest of her life. Your only other option would be finding someone from the research facility, but they're all monsters. What makes you think they'd lift a finger to help you?"
Raymond remained silent, carrying Selena as he moved ahead. Two men restrained Mario, who suddenly called out, "Raymond!"
Raymond's steps faltered, curious about what else this man had to say. But Mario only lowered his head, muttering under his breath, "Why should you have everything? Why do all the advantages fall into your lap?"
Raymond's brow furrowed—he had no idea what the man was rambling about. "Keep him restrained and follow me," he ordered curtly.
"Yes, sir."
The group hastened toward Eldon's location. As they approached their vehicle, Raymond spotted another figure silhouetted against the flames—Emilio.
When Raymond had traced "cooperation" in tea on the table earlier, he hadn't been certain Emilio would agree. Fortunately, the man seemed to turn a blind eye to everything happening on the inner island. Raymond wasn't naive; he sensed that while Emilio appeared to be helping him, he was actually serving someone else's interests. Who that might be remained unclear, but ultimately, Raymond's side was benefiting.
He held Selena closer as Emilio emerged from the wall of flames, step by deliberate step. While Mario's plan had indeed succeeded tonight, Emilio remained the true master of Mystic Prison. Mario had calculated everything except one crucial detail—most of the inner island's inhabitants served as Emilio's eyes and ears, even within the great families themselves. How else could Emilio maintain his position as Mystic Prison's overlord, commanding such unwavering obedience?
When Emilio chose to investigate something, he invariably uncovered the truth. Once he discovered Mario's bombs, deducing the man's intention to orchestrate a mass grave became elementary. Tonight, Emilio had played along, staging a conflict with the Schmidt family before making his strategic exit. The explosions that devastated the Schmidt compound had spared both him and Raymond, who had departed even earlier.
Now Emilio stood before Raymond, his attention fixed on Selena. Behind his mask, she recognized the person who had once warned her. Nestled in Raymond's arms, she felt a profound sense of security, though the surrounding inferno and acrid smoke still made her uncomfortable.
Raymond broke the silence first. "Mystic Prison is in ruins. Won't you come with us?"
Emilio remained motionless, his hand rising to touch the mask covering his face. His mind felt clouded—how else could he have allowed Raymond to reduce the inner island to this hellscape? Raymond's machinations had been masterful, manipulating even Mario while earning Eldon's trust. But escaping Mystic Prison wouldn't be so simple.
"Raymond, K's forces have already cast their net around the perimeter," Emilio warned.
"I'm aware. I have people waiting outside as well. I'm asking you—will you leave with us?"
Emilio stood frozen as understanding dawned on him. He finally grasped why Selena had fallen for Raymond—both possessed something pure and untainted in their souls, something clean in a world of corruption.
Footsteps approached from behind, and someone knelt at Emilio's back. "Mr. Blair, the leader requests your presence."
The destruction of Mystic Prison would certainly draw the attention of Emilio's superiors. He had failed his leader, and whatever punishment awaited him remained unknown.
"No, thank you. Take care of yourself," Emilio replied, turning away without hesitation and walking toward the opposite direction.
Raymond said nothing more, carrying Selena to their waiting vehicle.
