Chapter 171 Being Too Simple Isn't Great Either
Selena welcomed Lillian in and, being polite, got her a glass of water.
Lillian had been over with Carter before, but now that Selena had rearranged the place, it looked different. Max was sitting nearby, wagging his tail every now and then, looking super well-behaved.
Lillian really liked Max. Before she started chatting with Selena, she went to grab some jerky treats for him.
Then she began, "Penny, you know Carter's from a rich family, right? When we started dating, everyone said he'd dump me soon. I mean, I'm just a receptionist. We met when he was at the Montague Group for a few days."
That must've been when Raymond made him work there for some experience.
Even then, Carter couldn't stop flirting.
Selena had seen Carter tangled up with his ex before, who was all glamorous, but Lillian was more of the sweet, innocent type. Clearly, Carter had switched up his style this time.
Plus, Carter had been hitting up clubs for years and probably met all kinds of beauties. No wonder Lillian felt insecure.
"And I heard his mom never really liked the women around him. I met Ms. Montague once; she's got a strong presence," Lillian added.
Women are naturally sensitive about these things, and Lillian could tell right away that Grace was tough to get along with and very strict with Carter.
Rumor had it that his girlfriends broke up with him because of Grace, but they weren't great either.
Selena wasn't really into gossip, but since Lillian saw her as a friend and was opening up, she couldn't be too blunt. "Actually, Ms. Montague is pretty easy to get along with. She probably just has a fixed impression from Carter's past girlfriends. Once she sees your good qualities, she won't stop you from being with him."
Lillian didn't question how Selena addressed Carter. After all, Selena was an interior designer, and Carter had mentioned he'd have her design some of his properties.
Plus, Lillian already saw Selena as Carter's friend, which made her trust Selena even more.
And since Selena was also Raymond's interior designer, and Raymond had just come back to the country, it probably meant she had a strong connection with Carter.
But Selena was married, so no threat there.
Even though Carter was a bit of a playboy, he never messed around with married women.
Seeing Lillian deep in thought, Selena kept comforting her, "Don't worry, Ms. Montague isn't the type to be too hard on other women."
Since even Carter's friend Selena said so, Lillian felt completely reassured.
Lillian, in her twenties and younger than Selena, had started working early, hinting at a tough family situation.
If she could really be with Carter, it would be a good thing.
After Lillian left, Selena sat alone, breathing a sigh of relief.
But she was still thinking about that awkward moment earlier.
At least she got the photo, and it was a really atmospheric one. For someone who paints, getting good material was worth a bit of embarrassment.
After all, Raymond didn't care about her.
Selena immediately started painting, using only black and white, and recreated the scene from the photo on her phone.
Raymond naturally had this noble vibe, and with such an atmosphere, he looked even more distinguished.
Selena finished the painting in less than an hour and placed it by the floor-to-ceiling window to dry.
In the evening, just as she was about to order some late-night snacks, Lillian came over with some she had made herself, saying it was to thank Selena.
"Penny, I made something light. I know you guys are busy and often don't eat on time, which might cause stomach problems. Want to try it?"
Lillian had no bad intentions and was very simple-minded, but sometimes being too simple wasn't great either.
For instance, right then, Lillian went to feed Max again and saw the painting by the window. Knowing it was Selena's work, she took a photo of it with her phone.
Lillian didn't expect that Selena, an interior designer, could be so good at portraiture.
She and Carter had just started dating and had a strong urge to share, so she immediately sent the photo to Carter.
